Position Summary
Under general supervision, maintains the cleanliness of the communities of the Tohono O'odham Nation by driving commercial trucks to collect and pick up refuse and waste according to established Nation's solid waste code, regulations, policies and procedures. Operates a wide variety of Solid Waste equipment, such as: Front Loader and Rear Loader Waste Compactor trucks, Roll-off trucks, Dump trucks with and without trailers, Tractor-trailers, and Water trucks.
The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure safety, accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and five years' work experience as a Commercial Driver License driver, to include but not limited to safe vehicle operations; air brake systems; tractor and trailer coupling and uncoupling; cargo handling; and trip planning, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Drives and operates Front Loader and Rear Loader Waste Compactor trucks, Roll-off trucks, Dump trucks with and without trailers, Tractor-trailers, and Water trucks.
- Loads and dumps garbage and trash from residential and commercial containers into frontend compactor trucks.
- Observes all safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to self, others, or equipment.
- Removes garbage and trash using various hand tools such as pitchforks, rakes, shovels, or hoes.
- Drives loaded trash truck to landfill site and discharges contents as directed by the landfill staff.
- Required to performs daily equipment inspections and/or maintain minor maintenance on equipment to assure proper and safe working conditions.
- Reports any irregularities or malfunctions to mechanic in writing.
- Maintains equipment and trucks in a clean and safe operating condition.
- Maintains technical knowledge by attending safety training and workshops.
- Maintains daily log and submits written reports as directed.
- Observes all safety, tribal codes, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Cleans and picks up litter around bins at project work sites and other locations.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.
- Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
- Knowledge of tribal communities and business locations within the Tohono O'odham Nation.
- Knowledge of traffic laws that pertains to Commercial Driver License (CDL) operated solid waste equipment.
- Knowledge of truck operation and safety, proper storage and maintenance of equipment.
- Skill in safely operating and maintaining heavy equipment and machinery.
- Skill in following written and verbal instructions.
- Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
- Skill in following safe practices and procedures related to heavy equipment operations.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
- Must obtain and maintain certification in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within six months of hire.
- Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
- May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
- If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
- Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
