GENERAL PURPOSE
Supervise deputies assigned to their team to ensure proper operation of court security, inmate transportation, inmate discipline, assigned programs, and detention center support as required. Ensure policies and procedures are followed, maintain order, and ensure prisoner welfare per the Tooele County Detention Center Policy and Procedure Manual. Coordinate submission of reports, invoices, and other required documentation. This promotional position is subject to a six-month probationary period.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Sheriff, Chief Deputy, and Corrections Lieutenant.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises assigned deputies and oversees inmate care in accordance with Tooele County Detention Center policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform technical, professional, and first-line supervisory law enforcement duties related to detention center operations, inmate transportation, and court services.
Supervise and evaluate subordinate deputies, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures; provide guidance and relay managerial directives.
Maintain security in assigned areas; conduct inspections for safety and contraband control.
Enforce policies and procedures as necessary.
Assist with Corrections Lieutenant duties when required.
Supervise and coordinate inmate transportation for court, medical, and inter-agency transfers; ensure vehicle security and maintain logs.
Monitor inmate behavior, conduct searches, and enforce discipline to prevent disturbances and ensure compliance with regulations.
Oversee inmate programs, disciplinary hearings, and grievance processes.
Maintain accurate records and submit required reports and invoices to appropriate agencies.
Train and supervise volunteers providing inmate programs and services.
Escort inmates within the facility and during external transports.
Provide security for visitors and enforce facility regulations.
Provide civil paper service as assigned.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education and Experience :
Certified as a Corrections Deputy under Utah State Law.
Ability to act quickly in emergencies and exercise sound judgment.
Special Requirements :
This position involves working rotating shifts to include weekends and holidays; frequent lifting of 25-50 pounds with occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds or more. This is often combined with bending, twisting, working on irregular surfaces or at heights above the ground, running, apprehending violent offenders and operating a firearm. Exposure to sudden physical and emotional demands and the need to physically defend oneself and / or restrain unruly individuals may require the use of weapons. Ability to think and act quickly in emergency situations, use of judgment for people and situations.
Marginal function : Limited traveling will be required.
