Accounts Payable Accountant
The Town of Montville has an immediate opening for a full-time, Accounts Payable Accountant in our Finance Department. The Accounts Payable Accountant performs highly responsible and confidential financial, technical and administrative accounting work in maintaining the fiscal records and systems of the Town. The work involves the use of independent judgment, initiative, and accuracy based upon the fiscal policies of the Town.
The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of and experience in municipal accounting including reconciling, processing payroll, compliance and reporting requirements, computerized accounting records, spreadsheet processing. Knowledge of governmental accounting theory, principles and practices is desired.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Utilizes the Accounts Payable system for logging, filing and inputting information into the accounting system and for processing checks.
Performs requisite duties and is responsible for the following: preparing and mailing customer bills and answering telephone requests for information about invoices, bids, etc.
Traces all invoices and generates the Town's General Government checks.
Prepares and keeps an updated vendor list for all departments.
Prepares and updates the Town's Fixed Asset Ledger from purchase orders.
Reviews the Treasurer's figures and balances the General Fund Checking Account.
Works with the Finance Director and the Treasurer to prepare for the auditing firm to accomplish the year and audit and to perform tasks, as requested, for special projects.
Provides year end 1099 forms to individual vendors.
Completes the payroll in the absence of the Payroll Accountant. Provides support to other department staff as required.
Composes, inputs, and edits a variety of correspondence, reports, memoranda, and
other material requiring judgment as to content, accuracy, and completeness.
Maintains absolute confidentiality relating to sensitive information.
Regular attendance is a requirement of this position.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Training
Associate Degree and one year of progressively responsible accounting or finance work, graduation from high school or GED equivalent plus four (4) years of municipal accounting or finance work or, an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Necessary License or Certification
Must be bondable.
Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers’ License.
Must pursue continued education through GFOA.
The ideal candidate will have excellent administrative skills. *Municipal experience and payroll experience is a plus!
