The Lead Maintenance Worker is responsible for leading and overseeing the daily work of assigned Public Works crew members. This position performs a variety of manual labor and skilled tasks associated with the maintenance of Town infrastructure, public grounds, parks, streets, and facilities. The role includes supervising field operations, ensuring job site safety, maintaining records, and providing technical assistance and training to staff. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Works Director.


  • Provide daily direction, training, and work review for maintenance staff.
  • Organize and assign work priorities; ensure timely and high-quality completion of tasks.
  • Perform inspections and maintenance of playgrounds, athletic fields, streets, and parks.
  • Operate heavy equipment including dump trucks, front-end loaders, rollers, tractors, and excavators.
  • Perform preventative and minor equipment repairs; coordinate major repairs with vendors.
  • Ensure adherence to safety regulations; secure job sites and promote safe working practices.
  • Respond to emergency calls including weather events and infrastructure repairs.
  • Maintain inventory and ensure proper use of equipment, signage, and supplies.
  • Receive and respond to citizen inquiries and coordinate service responses.
  • Conduct field safety assessments and attend safety meetings.
  • Assist with sidewalk, signage, and stormwater infrastructure maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate work records and submit reports to supervisors.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office tools for documentation, communication, and reporting.
  • Model professional and courteous service to internal teams and the public.
  •  Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental goals and Town operations.

- High School Diploma or GED.
 - Three (3) years of experience in landscape or facility maintenance, including some experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.
 - Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

- Valid North Carolina driver’s license and clean driving record. Preferably a CDL

Knowledge of:

- Basic principles of team supervision and training.

- Town policies, procedures, and departmental operations.

- Safe work practices and OSHA regulations.

- Tools, materials, and methods used in parks and facility maintenance.

- Techniques for landscaping, pruning, planting, irrigation, and turf management.

- Basic mechanics and vehicle maintenance.

- Emergency response and storm recovery operations.

- Use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Skill in:

- Leading and motivating teams to meet operational goals.

- Planning, assigning, and reviewing work tasks.

- Using and maintaining hand and power tools and heavy equipment safely.

- Reading and interpreting plans, drawings, maps, and manuals.

- Communicating clearly both orally and in writing.

- Responding effectively to public inquiries and service requests.

- Creating reports and maintaining accurate work records.

- Collaborating with internal teams and community stakeholders.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

This position requires physical stamina, agility, and the ability to work in indoor and outdoor settings. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, operate heavy equipment, and work in varying weather conditions. Duties may involve climbing, bending, walking long distances, and standing for extended periods. The role includes exposure to loud noise, dust, fumes, chemicals, and moving traffic.

Working Conditions

Work may be performed independently or in team settings and requires participation in emergency response, including evenings and weekends as needed. Employees may be exposed to hazardous equipment and conditions. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used as required.

Salary : $44,964 - $66,547
