Job Summary:
We are seeking a Research & Development Intern to join our Product Development team in Madison, WI. This is a temporary part-time position, reporting to the R&D Manager. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in food science. Experience with pasta, nut butters or bars is a bonus. Your primary role will be to assist in development of products from concept to commercialization, ensuring the highest standards for taste, quality and safety. You will collaborate closely with multiple departments throughout the product life cycle, from conception to discontinuation.
The ideal candidate has some experience in food service or industrial kitchen support. They will possess and demonstrate the ability to manage multiple priorities; and articulate and convey thoughts and ideas to various audiences while exuding a strong sense of ownership for operations and results.
Work Schedule and Hours (Part-time):
Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 12:00pm. Approximately 4 hours a day. Schedule can be flexible to accommodate class schedules.
Key Responsibilities:
- Comply with all food safety, workplace safety and quality policies/procedures.
- Perform R&D testing of finished products and raw materials. Testing includes water activity, moisture analysis, gluten and allergen testing, pH, and viscosity.
- Sampling of finished products including pasta, cookies, and nut butters.
- Assist in maintaining inventory of the test kitchen.
- Learn the basic cost matrix of each raw material to understand cost reduction principles.
- Understanding the scaling process.
- Maintaining certifications (Kosher, Organic, GFCO, plant based, etc.).
- Requesting documentation for new supplier and raw material approval.
- Participate in weekly production line trials.
- Organize and complete R&D and plant trial documentation.
