Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Accounting Specialist to join our finance team. The ideal candidate will possess strong financial acumen and be proficient in various accounting practices. The Accounting Specialist will work closely with other departments to support financial operations and contribute to the overall success of the organization.
Responsibilities
- Assist in developing and implementing processes and controls, and Standard Operating Procedures to ensure timely and accurate submission of audit deliverables.
- Assist in developing and implementing processes and Standard Operating Procedures to review the completeness and sufficiency of financial data, including supporting documentation associated with abnormal balances, USSGL analytics, Fund Balance with Treasury, suspense accounts and cash management.
- Assist in reviewing the monthly consolidated DHSTIER submissions.
- Support the preparation of monthly CFO Certified deliverables required by the DHS Component Requirements Guide (CRG).
- Assist in developing and implementing processes and Standard Operating Procedures to review the completeness and sufficiency of financial data, including supporting documentation associated with abnormal balances, USSGL analytics, Fund Balance with Treasury, suspense accounts and cash management.
- Review unliquidated obligations process, reviewing the reimbursable orders process, analyzing reports, reviewing, and reconciling subsidiary ledgers to provide analytical support to federal staff.
- Analyze and interpret financial and accounting data to provide guidance for decision making.
- Technically proficient in using the advanced functions of Excel (i.e., pivots, conditional formatting, lookups, etc.)
- Apply accounting principles and concepts to direct, develop, implement, and coordinate a variety of accounting functions, accounting policy, and audit related activities.
- Assist the Government in the analysis of new requirements, initiatives, or enhancements in Government-wide financial reporting and provide technical assistance for implementation (e.g., Treasury initiatives).
- Analyze and review of audit and financial reporting deliverables to ensure that they are prepared in accordance with OMB Circular A-136 and other applicable Federal GAAP requirements.
- Perform internal control reviews, or other evaluations of assigned systems and functions to assess areas for data adequacy, safeguarding of assets, effectiveness of systems employed, reliability of information and other compliance with laws and regulations. Identify issues, discrepancies, or other problems while performing duties and recommend corrective actions as needed for resolution.
- Analyze and interpret accounting data and reports, and perform financial analysis, forecasts, and evaluations.

Requirements
- Proven experience in financial management and general ledger accounting.
- Strong knowledge of bank reconciliation processes and financial auditing practices.
- Proficiency in Xero or similar accounting software is preferred.
- Familiarity with tax regulations and private equity principles is a plus.
- Excellent attention to detail with strong organizational skills.
- Ability to analyze financial data effectively and provide actionable insights.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate across departments.
- A degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory.
