What are the responsibilities and job description for the Program Coordinator position at Trinity Episcopal Church?

Trinity Episcopal Church

Charlottesville, Virginia

Program Coordinator for Bread & Roses: Trinity seeks a part-time (10 hours/week) Bread & Roses Program Coordinator to help lead and shape current activities of the program, as well as future endeavors. The position has the potential to grow as the program expands. The salary is competitive, but no benefits are available currently. The position reports to the Rector.

Background:

Trinity Episcopal Church of Charlottesville, Virginia was founded in 1919 and is one of 170 Episcopal churches in the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. Trinity has its roots as an African American parish and in the early 1970’s consciously sought to integrate its congregation. Today, Trinity is unique in Charlottesville as an economically and racially diverse parish with an average Sunday attendance of 90 worshippers. Trinity Episcopal actively strives to live into its mission: We seek to be an intentional multicultural Christian community of reconciliation, transformation and love.

Trinity’s Bread & Roses ministry is one of the church’s most active programs. Bread & Roses thrives at the intersection of creation care, economic justice, and opportunity. The ministry is Trinity’s homegrown outreach to the Charlottesville community in which the church resides and seeks to serve. The Bread & Roses vision from the beginning has been to transform the ways we acquire, cook, and relate to the foods we eat.

Bread & Roses embraces the responsible stewardship of creation, which includes protecting the biodiversity of the native habitat and practicing sustainable agriculture. It grows organic vegetables, herbs, and fruit that are distributed to those in the community experiencing food insecurity. While it restores and maintains a sustainable native habitat on the church grounds, it also supports Master Gardening and other community education programs. The garden program is part of the Episcopal Church’s emphasis on creation care and its commitment “to form and restore loving, liberating, life-giving relationships with all of Creation.” The program values inclusion, community, stewardship, spirituality, and joy.

The Bread & Roses commercial kitchen is a vibrant space for culinary creativity as well as a manifestation of principles rooted in hospitality, stewardship, and service. The commercial kitchen has been a valuable springboard for local entrepreneurs to turn their culinary passions into viable businesses, empowering local chefs, caterers, and food startups by providing access to a fully equipped kitchen. Grounded in the belief that food is a sacred gift meant to nourish the body and the spirit, the kitchen—like the Bread & Roses garden ministry—promotes sustainable practices and serves others. Both parts of the Bread & Roses ministry embody the Biblical call to share resources and talents for the common good.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Oversee commercial kitchen rental program

The program coordinator is responsible for the general oversight of kitchen maintenance and the kitchen rental program. This includes:

  • Tenant recruitment, kitchen orientation, oversight of scheduling and billing, and mentoring if needed
  • Liaising with the Health Department
  • Operating as a ServSafe Manager (in line with Health Department guidelines)
  • Oversight of the kitchen scholarship program and other community partnerships
  • Oversight of kitchen maintenance and upkeep

2. Maintain and increase a funding revenue stream through donations and grants

The program has a history of successful grant applications. The coordinator will manage current grant administration and reporting while also seeking new sources of funding. The coordinator will also develop other fundraising initiatives, such as events or appeals to individual donors.

3. Develop a volunteer base for garden programs

A key component in the success of this ministry will be the development of an extensive volunteer network. This will require working within Trinity Church, especially its Garden Committee, as well as with Episcopal parishes of Charlottesville Region of the Diocese (23 Episcopal Churches in and around Charlottesville). In addition, volunteers may be drawn from other places of worship as well as community and partner organizations. Responsibilities in this area will include recruitment, training of volunteers, and oversight of a wide and diverse volunteer network.

4. Manage community partnerships

As time permits, the program coordinator will nurture and expand existing partnerships as well as initiate and develop new ones.

The ideal candidate will be someone with experience and proficiency in most of the following:

  • Organizational skills, with the ability to create structure, manage detail, and design streamlined processes
  • Fundraising and/or grant writing
  • Work in a faith-based organization or food- or garden-related non-profit
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of the community/non-profit landscape in Charlottesville
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with parishioners as well as community partners
  • Familiarity with food service in a commercial setting, or willingness to learn on the job, as well as possess or be willing to acquire certification as a ServSafe Manager (a requirement for the role)
  • Comfort working in a church setting and explaining programs based on theological foundations

This role requires primarily on-site work during the week, though the Coordinator may also be expected to be present on Sundays when worship services and other church activities take place.
