GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the leadership of the Director, the Manager of Employee Relations will directly manage Employee Relations Partners for assigned UAB Medicine entities as well as oversee the day-to-day operations of the Employee Relations Partner team. In collaboration with other Human Resource areas, Office of Counsel, and other partners, the Manager will assist in workplace investigations, determine findings, and facilitate timely resolution as needed.The Manager will be responsible for providing guidance and timely decisions for complex and escalated HR employee relations matters, ensuring risk is mitigated for the organization while maintaining support for the managers and employees the department supports.The Manager must have good judgment in deciding when to involve departmental partners, including the Director of Employee Relations

Position requires bachelor’s degree in business, Human Resource or related field and seven (7) years of related work experience, with HR leadership experience at manager level or above. Extensive knowledge of federal and state employment laws.Extensive experience and comfort with conflict resolution and complex HR investigations. Ability to synthesize and make appropriate decisions with large amounts of detailed information. Ability to build and sustain successful working relationships through trust, teamwork and communication.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Position requires bachelor’s degree in business, Human Resource or related field and seven (7) years of related work experience, with HR leadership experience at manager level or above. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under the leadership of the Director, the Manager is responsible for ensuring employee relations practices inspire trust and confidence in all Human Resources partnerships with employees and leaders.
- Proactively round with assigned UAB Medicine leaders to ensure support needs are consistently met.Identify opportunities and implement changes in conjunction with the Director when necessary to ensure best practices for employee relations are maintained.Consistently pursue a continuous quality improvement process for employee relations.Report positive and concerning trends to Director.
- Supervise employees in responsibility area, conduct regular individual rounding and team meetings (creating agendas which include outcomes/follow-up steps it needed) with employee relations staff, complete annual performance evaluations, and participate in hiring, onboarding, orienting, training, constructive one-on-one coaching, team-building and disciplinary processes. Develop and update training work aids and resources. Identify and coordinate training opportunities for team, including Human Resources partners as needed.Manage team’s time off, ensuring office hours are covered appropriately.Maintain Employee Relations Partner team files. Foster positive team environment among staff.
- In collaboration with Human Resource professionals, Office of Counsel and others, conduct and oversee or assist in workplace investigations with an emphasis on HR matters, including employment policy violations, retaliation, harassment and discrimination allegations, Ethics Hotline concerns, threat management, and EEOC charges.Ensure that investigations that involve Discrimination, Retaliation, Title IX and Title VII are directed to the Director of Employee Relations for assignment to the Employee Relations Coordinator team.
- Ensure Ethics Hotline concerns as investigated appropriately and that closure is sent to Director of Employee Relations.
- Ensure Employee Relations Partners maintain Case Logs as well as Employee Files in designated centralized location.Upload documents to ShareFile as needed.
- Preliminary review terminations prior to Director of Employee Relations.In the absence of the Director of Employee Relations, the Manager will be responsible for approving terminations that are requested by department with assistance from other HR leaders or Office of Counsel as needed.
- Conduct Monthly Huddles for Employee Relations Partners, which include case reviews led by the Employee Relations Manager.
- Collaborate with the Director of Employee Relations for monthly departmental meetings and hosting them in the Director’s absence.
- Assist in covering designated areas during staffing shortage or recommending Employee Relations Partner who can cover the area during the vacancy.
- Conduct training in-services for assignedUAB Medicine leadership if needed.
- Provide cross-coverage for other Employee Relations leaders as requested.
- Special projects and other duties as assigned.
