Cellarhand II Job Description
We're looking for a cellarhand to join our team temporarily, working 40 hours a week on a Tuesday-Friday schedule.
As a temporary cellarhand, you will be responsible for helping with all aspects of wine production in a growing facility. In this position, you will need to have the ability to operate autonomously and feel empowered to make decisions, while also following directions. Working effectively and efficiently while maintaining wine quality will be of paramount importance. In this position, you will work closely with and report to the Cellar Supervisor.
Essential Functions:
Understand and adhere to all safety requirements.
Read and follow standard operating procedures and other instructions.
Ensure presentation, organization, and sanitation of the cellar is always of the highest standard.
Coordinate and monitor wine and juice movements using various pumps and vessels.
Operate a forklift and scissorlift.
Barrel management, including topping, cleaning, and sulfuring.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of at least 3 of the following processes:
o Barrel pumpouts
o Mox
o Pulsair Drain and Press
o Flotation
o Hose Repair
Thorough knowledge of the operation of at least 1 piece of the following filtration equipment:
o Winetech Crossflow
o Della Toffola Crossflow
o Della Toffola RDV
Troubleshoot basic equipment problems to determine issues.
Provide support to Enologist by collecting samples of juice, must and wine and participating in at least one 2-week lab rotation.
Report to and assist at the packaging facility on an as-needed basis.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Requirements:
Participated in at least one harvest
At least 6 months of cellar work at Union Wine Company or 1 year elsewhere
Ability to operate heavy equipment
Forklift experience
The ability to lift greater than 50 pounds, stand for long periods of time and walk many miles
Ability to work at heights up to 30 feet
Strong communication and interpersonal skills in English (verbal and written)
A driver’s license and a reliable vehicle
The ability to work independently and in group environments
The ability to work in various weather conditions outdoors or indoors
Overtime and weekend work may be required without notice depending on circumstance of production needs.
Education and Experience
High school diploma/GED and 1 years’ experience in a cellar environment required.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to changes in temperature, indoor and outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
