Responsibilities
Description of Position:. |
The Emergency Room Clerk is responsible for answering and transferring phone calls, registering patients, and greeting and assisting patients and visitors.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities: |
|
Patient Access · Displays professionalism, tact, respect and team effort when working with coworkers, and public. · Adheres to the hospital policies and procedures and attends mandatory training. · Answering and transferring incoming phone calls and greeting and directing patients and visitors to their destinations. · Register all in and outpatient services, ensuring the proper papers are signed and distributed. · Responsible for ensuring all registrations are completed accurately to ensure timely billing. · Completion of insurance verifications in EPIC. · Responsible for cash box, making change, doing accurate receipts for cash when needed. · Accurately documents information on charts as needed. · Assist with general Business Office duties as needed, maintaining a high level of confidentially and professionalism concerning patient’s rights.

Emergency Department Support · Assists with transporting patients and specimens to other areas of the hospital. · Observes patients for any changes in status and reports changes to the nurse and references patients by preferred name. · Provides patient safety by using side rails, and call lights. · Follows infection control guidelines. · Assists with cleaning, restocking, requisition of supplies online. · Assists with security by monitoring patient entrances. · Maintains communication with patient, family, providers, nurses and support staff. · Responsible to clean provider room at provider shift change and clerk work area per housekeeping guidelines. Responsible for cleaning assigned area of ED and ambulance garage as needed. · Responsible for all accurate paperwork for patient transfer and admissions to hospital or long-term care. · Responsible for calling transport services, ground or air. · Maintain emergency communication system database. Generate emergency messages as directed by ED team or hospital administration. · Responsible for maintaining all logs, including but not limited to: Patient Transfer and Admit, Associate Medications, scanning/emailing the admin report and Emergency Department report. · Responsible for all hospital associate work comp and needle stick paperwork, assuring completed and distributed accurately. · Coordinate back-up physician signature of EMTALA documentation.

Basic UPH Performance Criteria · Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines. · Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance. · Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position. · Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, CAH COPs, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. · Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year. · Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance. |
