At UConn Health, this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for Medical Technologists, Technicians, Laboratory Assistants, and students, assuring the reporting of test results to provide diagnostic information to the hospital and community. This position will support the Storrs MLS program and oversee the CME activity program. This position is in Farmington, CT.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives direction from the Associate Director, Laboratory Director or Manager, Lab Division Director, or Medical Director.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Leads/supervises laboratory staff as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Supervise Medical Technologists, Technicians, Laboratory Assistants, and students, assuring the reporting of test results to provide diagnostic information to the hospital and community.
Plans unit workflow and determines priorities; schedules, assigns, oversees, and reviews work; provides training and assistance to staff, medical students, and residents; conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations.
Supports the Storrs MLS program and oversees the CME activity program.
Acts as liaison with operating units' agencies, and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; may make recommendations on policies or standards; ensures compliance of regulatory requirements.
Coordinates the performance of daily and monthly quality control procedures; tracks and resolves issues, updates problem/error log and submits monthly error report to quality assurance.
Coordinates the routine and preventative maintenance on all instrumentation and takes appropriate corrective action.
Maintains facilities in accordance with state and local regulations; performs monthly inspections and corrective action as needed.
Oversees ordering, controlling, and maintaining laboratory supplies.
Ensures fiscal responsibility in monitoring departmental budget expenditures.
Assists in the clinical evaluation and implementation of new and existing test procedures, equipment, and products as they relate to a specific lab.
Keeps current on related methodology and technology.
May be assigned special projects.
Operates independently on the development of new techniques.
Manages work queues relevant to services; keeps records, prepares and updates drafted reports and procedure manuals.
Performs the duties of medical technologists in response to workload and staff coverage.
Independently performs complex testing procedures.
Acts as a resource person in specialty.
Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY:
Considerable knowledge of relevant agency policies and procedures.
Considerable knowledge of relevant State and Federal laws, statutes, and regulations.
Considerable knowledge of standard laboratory procedures including phlebotomy, specimen processing, patient privacy, and laboratory safety practices.
Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
Considerable interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
Excellent customer service skills.
Proficient computer and laboratory program software skills.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster an environment of cooperation, support, and teamwork.
Considerable technical and theoretical ability in the appropriate lab specialty.
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
Supervisory ability.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
General Experience:
Bachelor's degree in medical technology or related science and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience.
SUBSTITUTION ALLOWED:
Accreditation as a Technologist from the Board of Registry (ASCP) in the related specialty may be substituted for the bachelor's degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbents in this class may be given a visual color test. May be required to travel to offsite locations.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to disagreeable odors, infectious materials, radioactive, toxic, and other hazardous substances. Work requires visual strain due to protracted, close examination of specimens and use of a microscope (light or fluorescent). Prolonged standing and walking. May be required to lift heavy objects.
SCHEDULE: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, primarily Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, rotating holidays as needed, flexibility in scheduling required to accommodate special projects and departmental needs, 30-minute unpaid meal break.
