Duties and Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, teach college-level courses in Physics and Physical Sciences and perform related work including, but not limited to, development of teaching strategies, instructional materials and methods which: 1) use current technology in instruction where appropriate; 2) integrate instruction of appropriate quantitative/logical thinking skills into course contents; 3) develop, update and assess the competencies and skills for course Student Learning Outcomes; 4) address the learning needs of community college students; and 5) develop and teach courses using a variety of delivery systems (e.g., face-to-face, online, hybrid and/or other distance delivery formats including field trips to neighbor islands) as needed and appropriate.
- Coordinate Physics and Physical Science course offerings, including Early College, and curriculum with other University of Hawaii Community Colleges in order to promote collaboration, optimize enrollment, and meet students’ academic needs in Physics and Physical Sciences across the UHCC campuses.
- Develop and maintain an appropriate Physics curriculum and pathway from within the College’s Early College program for efficient transfer through Windward CC to UH baccalaureate institutions.
- Develop a curriculum that provides practical applications of physics such as aerospace science, architecture, biomechanics, communication systems, construction, geophysics, energy production, engineering, environmental remediation, imaging, optics, rocketry, sailing, etc.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive plan to maximize enrollment in Physics and Physical Sciences classes at Windward Community College.
- Provide mentorship to students in internships and research projects.
- Teaching assignments may include distance education, contract teaching, evenings, weekends, early college classes at local high schools, including Hawaiian immersion schools, and/or off-campus assignments.
- Prepare and revise course outlines, perform course, and program-level assessments, including program self-studies and annual reports.
- Participate in departmental, faculty and administrative committees, community service, in-service training, and assessment activities.
- Independently plan, organize and carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments, including, but not limited to, preparing program budget requests, managing program/project budgets, managing supplies and equipment inventories, collecting data, preparing reports, and providing oversight of chemical waste management (disposal and storage).
- Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught.

- Participate in student recruitment, orientation, retention, and graduation activities.
- Conduct community outreach and on/off campus program promotion of Physics, teach community service courses.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Physics.
- All minimum qualifications must be from a regionally accredited institution and met by the effective date of appointment. If qualified applicants are not available, others will be considered on an Acting Instructor basis.
Desirable Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Physics or equivalent.
- Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Engineering or significant advanced coursework in engineering.
- Research experience, and/or peer-reviewed publications in Physics or Engineering.
- Knowledge of current Physical Science research.
- Demonstrated ability to relate aspects of physics and engineering to Polynesian Voyaging and other aspects of place-based culture and history.
- Experience with rocketry and/or aerospace engineering.
- Knowledge of and/or ability to incorporate Hawaiian language and/or Hawaiian traditional knowledge, values and practices as they relate to the physical sciences into the curriculum.
- Successful teaching experience at the university or community college level, as substantiated by both student and peer evaluations, in conducting lecturer and laboratory courses in Physics and Physical Science.
- Experience and/or demonstrated ability to serve as a mentor to students engaged in project-based research and/or internships.
- Demonstrated ability in curriculum development, including online and/or hybrid instruction.
- Demonstrated ability in conducting course-level assessment of student learning outcomes, analyzing relevant data, and utilizing the results to improve instruction.
- Successful experience and/or ability to collaborate with community organizations and/or relevant industry to promote student learning outside of the classroom.
- Knowledge and understanding of student-centered learning and the community college philosophy.
- Knowledge and understanding of Windward Community College’s mission.
