Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Adams School of Dentistry, established in 1950 and made possible by an Act of the North Carolina General Assembly in 1949, is now part of a dynamic Health Science campus! The school provides oral health care to more than 90,000 patients each year and provides additional in-kind services totaling more than $3.6M annually through four student-led free dental clinics and other charitable care events. The Adams School of Dentistry is one of six health science schools (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, Public Health) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the first dental school in the state of North Carolina. The ASOD consists of seven (7) Academic Departments: Biomedical Sciences, Craniofacial and Surgical Care (Craniofacial Center, Geriatrics/Special Care, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Oral Medicine), Restorative Sciences (General Dentistry, Operative & Biomaterials and Prosthodontics), Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health, Orthodontics, Diagnostic Sciences (Oral Microbiology, Orofacial Pain/Sleep, Pathology and Radiology) and Periodontology, Endodontics and Dental Hygiene (one department). Currently the ASOD has 1,077 incumbents, filling 589 faculty positions (412 non-paid adjunct status, 177 in-pay status), 83 fellow positions, 33 post-doc positions, 42 EHRA-NF positions, 283 SHRA positions and 47 SHRA student positions, and we have active recruitments for faculty and staff! Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Director of Human Resources Operations resides in the ASOD HR Office and reports to the Assistant Dean of Human Resources. The Director provides overall leadership and management for the HR daily operations service teams and functions. A significant portion of time will be dedicated to the HR Operations teams and serving as the initial escalation point for resolving HR inquiries/issues from within clinical operations and business operations. This position supervises the HR Business Partners/HR Specialist Teams and provides a broad range of HR consultant services to cover areas including, but not limited to, recruitment and selection, classification and compensation, leave administration, time reporting/payroll, performance management, position management, new employee orientation and onboarding, successful offboarding/transitioning, student and temporary employment, reporting and compliance, employee files, etc. This position serves as the Deputy to the Assistant Dean of Human Resources.
The Director will act as the initial escalation point for the HR Business Partners and HR Specialists, assisting with problem-solving and offering procedural guidance and training as needed for the HR Operational teams. This position provides consultation and support to department chairs, department managers, administrative managers, and serves as the technical expert lead providing overall direction of human resources operations across all employee types including EHRA, SHRA, Postdoc, Temporaries, and Students. The Director advises on policies and procedures related to recruitment, classification, compensation, employment, performance management, training and development, and serves as a liaison with central HR regarding benefits and leave administration. This position is also responsible for providing an interpretation of University HR policies, providing consultation and advice on general HR issues and concerns, helping carry out both division-level and campus-wide HR strategies and plans, as well as implementing both school-level and university-level HR strategies and plans within the department and school. The Director serves as the subject matter expert within the ASOD related to classification and compensation and is expected to provide guidance to the HRBPs as needed. This position will assist with problem-solving and offering procedural guidance as it relates to class and comp and will be expected to manage and implement school-wide class and comp projects and other projects as assigned by the Assistant Dean of HR.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and two years of progressively responsible professional human resources management experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience in a higher education setting, in particular UNC at Chapel Hill, with in depth knowledge of all HR systems/programs. Preference will be given to candidates with experience supporting multiple departments and/or units within a School/College/Unit with an understanding of confidentiality and a thorough knowledge of UNC policies and procedures for BOTH SHRA and EHRA positions. Preference will be given to candidates with experience and in-depth knowledge of appointments, promotions, reappointments and tenure track/tenure review processes. Management/leadership experience is highly preferred.
