Be a Tar Heel! | The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a Lecturer in Hindi-Urdu for the 2025-26 academic year. We are seeking a skilled language instructor with a commitment to a proficiency-based approach to language teaching. The pay is $9,000 per course section. This is a one-year nonrenewable position that carries no benefits. Classes meet 4 days a week for 50 minutes. We will also consider applicants located in the United States who would teach remotely. |

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (DAMES) is an academic unit in the College of Arts & Sciences. Our mission is to serve the undergraduate populations by offering majors and minors in a range of Asian and Middle Eastern languages and cultures. We also offer an MA program with two tracks: Interdisciplinary Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and Chinese Studies. In addition, our faculty conduct research in the field of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and contribute to the College, the University, and the state through service and leadership. |
Position Summary | Responsibilities include teaching three courses per semester, including elementary and intermediate levels of Hindi-Urdu. Other responsibilities include holding office hours and organizing cultural enrichment activities. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Master's degree in Hindi or Urdu language pedagogy or a related field. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Native or near-native proficiency in Hindi and/or Urdu and English is required. Experience teaching Hindi and/or Urdu as a second language at the university level (preferably in the U.S.), and knowledge of current best practices and technologies, is required. Facility with both the Devanagari (Hindi) and Nastaliq (Urdu) writing systems is preferred. Remote employees should have at least two years of experience teaching Hindi and/or Urdu at the university level, including some experience teaching remotely. |
