Position Summary

The mission SOM Office of Research (OoR) is to support research in the School of Medicine under the direction of the Vice Dean for Research. The office oversees the infrastructure, communication and development necessary for a strong and growing research enterprise which supports more than $648M in external grant funding annually. Collaboration is one of the great strengths of UNC-Chapel Hill's research enterprise and the OoR works closely with many different units and offices throughout the institution to increase interdisciplinary science and maximize the resources available to our researchers.

The OoR invites applications for a Research Development Manager position. This position will play a vital role in advancing the research mission of the SOM by providing expert grant-writing support and fostering the development of research programs across the institution. This position will primarily be responsible for identifying funding opportunities aligned with SOM faculty research areas and strategic priorities and facilitate the development of responsive teams. They will collaborate with faculty to plan, write, and edit grant proposals for submission to federal (e.g., NIH, NSF, DOD), state, and private funding agencies and support the pipeline of research teams through the administration of OoR Pilot Award Programs. The Research Development Manager will also serve as the primary resource for up-to-date information on funding opportunities, sponsor guidelines, and federal regulations and will develop and implement tools and processes for efficient data collection, tracking, and reporting related to research metrics and outcomes. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in grant writing, research development, and project management, with a focus on supporting faculty in securing competitive funding from federal, state, and private sponsors.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or professional-level background in sponsored research administration, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

PhD in relevant field

Relevant experience in grant writing / research development

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

PhD degree in biological / biomedical sciences

Strong, broad-based biomedical knowledge base and familiarity with research databases, grant writing and the processes involved in academic research.

Demonstrated experience with successful NIH, DoD, and other federal and private / foundation funding agencies.

Proven ability to manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, maturity, and tact.

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and grant management software.
