Position Description

Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Physical Therapy

  • Brief statement of duties and responsibilities:

The Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh, which is ranked number 8 in the US News and World Report, is currently recruiting adjunct faculty with a strong clinical background in physical therapy to teach in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program. The faculty member will be committed to excellence in didactic and clinical education. The part-time 12-month appointment in the appointment stream will be at the rank of Adjunct Instructor, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Adjunct Associate Professor, or Adjunct Professor, depending on the applicant's experience and credentials.

The Department is housed in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS), one of the six Schools of Health Sciences. We offer an entry-level professional Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, which is currently offered in the traditional, on-campus format. A hybrid format for the DPT degree is under development which will offer distance online education complemented by on-campus immersion experiences. The Department also features a post-professional Master of Science degree and a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Sciences, both in the on-campus format. We also offer the Advanced Vestibular Physical Therapist certificate, which is delivered in a hybrid format.

Responsibilities for the Adjunct Faculty position support Evidence-Based Practice (EBP 3) including:

  • Assisting lead faculty with curriculum planning, content development, and creation of assessment tools.
  • Providing instructional support for synchronous learning sessions by facilitating small group break-out sessions and group discussions conducted in-person or remotely.
  • Assisting with grading, evaluating, and reviewing student performance through multiple methods, including written oral, competency, and practical assessment.
  • Providing ancillary support services for instructors as needed.

  • Minimum objective qualifications; other desirable qualifications:

Qualified individuals should possess expertise in evidence-based practice and quality improvement, as well as clinical expertise across the spectrum of clinical settings and patient populations in which our students are placed.

Requirements for the position at the level of Adjunct Instructor:

  • Earned entry-level professional PT degree from a CAPTE-accredited program with an active PT license in Pennsylvania;

Requirements for the position at the level of Adjunct Assistant Professor:

  • Earned entry-level professional PT degree from a CAPTE-accredited program with an active PT license in Pennsylvania;
  • A minimum of 3 years of clinical experience; OR clinical specialist certification from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties; OR completion of physical therapy clinical residency or fellowship education program accredited by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience teaching in a healthcare-related profession program; OR 1 year of experience teaching evidence-based, accredited continuing education courses; OR 1 year of experience as a teaching faculty in an accredited physical therapy residency program

Requirements for the position at the level of Adjunct Associate Professor:

  • Earned entry-level professional PT degree from a CAPTE-accredited program with an active PT license in Pennsylvania;
  • A minimum of 6 years of clinical experience;
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience teaching in a healthcare-related profession program; OR 3 years of experience teaching evidence-based, accredited continuing education courses; OR 3 years of experience as a teaching faculty in an accredited physical therapy residency program.

Requirements for the position at the level of Adjunct Professor:

  • Earned entry-level professional PT degree from a CAPTE-accredited program with an active PT license in Pennsylvania;
  • A minimum of 6 years of clinical experience;
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience teaching in a healthcare-related profession program; OR 6 years of experience teaching evidence-based, accredited continuing education courses; OR 6 years of experience as a teaching faculty in an accredited physical therapy residency program;
  • Demonstrated excellence and national or international reputation in teaching, research, and/or service. Examples of excellence and reputation include but are not limited to experience in curriculum development, innovative teaching materials, teaching awards, publication history, external grant awards, or leadership positions in areas of teaching, research, or service.
  • Rank and/or title; salary range or minimum:

Appointment at the rank of Adjunct Instructor, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Adjunct Associate Professor, or Adjunct Professor is anticipated. The academic rank and salary are competitive and will be commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

This is an appointment stream, a part-time position. The time commitment varies by course.
