Advertised Job Summary

Supervises crew(s) responsible for the daily maintenance and beautification of the grounds of the USC Columbia campus.

Job Related Minimum Required Education And Experience

Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Employee must demonstrate organizational skills, planning and scheduling skills, problem solving and team building skills. Employee must have the ability to manage multiple and complex duties concurrently. Employee must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills. Employee must be able to prioritize work activities in alignment with the goals of the department, meet time restrictions and work within specific resource limitations. Employee must be able to assess training needs of subordinate employees. Employee must be able to make fact-based decisions and build positive customer relationships. Employee must use initiative and be proactive in discharging duties. Employee must project a positive image which encourages high morale and team spirit and promotes confidence, usefulness and purpose.

Performs inspections of assigned grounds by walking through and observing the landscape and hardscape surrounding the campus buildings and all green spaces in the assigned zone in order to review the work of employees, gather information for developing work schedules, assign tasks, communicate with customers, coordinate with Assistant Landscape Manager about issues related to the turf contractor and the care of all turf maintained in assigned area, communicate any possible hardscape repairs to the grounds masonry supervisor, and provide a visible landscape management presence to staff, faculty, students, and visitors. Performs back-up landscape work regularly to maintain the cleanliness and enhance the image of assigned zone when employee who originally completed the work is not available.

Develops and communicates special project work based on institutional and organizational requirements, site inspections, employees’ reports, and recommendations from building liaisons, and other staff to include using the pressure washer, heavy equipment, sweeper and trac-vacuums when called upon for catastrophic events such as damaging storms or flooding in order to provide a high level of customer service and an attractive and well-maintained campus. Responds to emergency landscaping situations, such as hazardous weather, as needed after hours by communicating with management personnel, assisting with determining plan of action, and physically arriving at area of distress in order to resolve the situation.

Communicates with building liaisons, bringing in upper management when necessary, in order to provide support, research issues, and enhance the image of landscaping services with University personnel by providing a sense of immediate customer service, solving problems, building rapport, gathering necessary information, and giving landscaping guidance and advice.

Performs administrative tasks including assisting University and departmental human resources in hiring, position management, and employee relations activities; assisting with the Facilities inventory control and maintaining a regular stock of landscaping supplies by monitoring, ordering, receiving and verifying supplies, materials, and tools from Consolidated Supplies and outside vendors following established procurement policies and procedures, distributing supplies to employees, and replenishing shop inventories; preparing reports and documents and/or providing information for management review including incidents, work order completions, supply and equipment needs, disciplinary actions, and position management information in order to provide management with necessary planning and scheduling information, to ensure correct labor charges are made to projects and service work, to keep management informed of incidents, issues, and needs, to review trends, and to share best practices and resolve problems within the landscaping service zone; and attending meetings and training events in order to gain knowledge of and apply landscaping, safety, supervisory, and continuous improvement principles and concepts including process mapping, defining measurement objectives, and researching and discussing best practices.

Supervises Landscaping personnel in assigned zone that are responsible for maintaining University grounds that are a safe, clean, and an attractive environment, including but not limited to, leading and assisting in trimming, edging, spraying, fertilizing, watering, pruning, planting shrubs, trees, flowers, collecting and removing refuse, operating heavy equipment, ensuring storm drains are cleaned and clear, coordinating and scheduling the installation of temporary construction fencing in assigned zone, etc., by providing direction, leadership, motivation, and on the job training; assigning and reviewing work; completing Employee Performance Management System documents; reviewing, verifying, and submitting labor sheets and leave slips; and assisting departmental human resources in hiring, position management, and employee relations activities while using various computer equipment and software including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Outlook, AIM, VIP, Internet access, and Adobe Acrobat Reader.
