Department Marketing Statement
The University of Texas at San Antonio's Department of Counseling invites applications for an open rank tenure track faculty position to begin FALL 2023. The Department seeks exceptional candidates with (1) a record of high-quality scholarship and service to the profession; (2) excellence in graduate education; (3) leadership experience; (4) a clear and strong counselor and/or counselor educator identity; and (5) a demonstrated commitment to inclusion and diversity. Candidates who have not completed their doctoral dissertation will not be considered. For candidates who have achieved tenure at another institution, tenure at UTSA will be contingent upon Board of Regents approval.

UTSA is a diverse, Hispanic Serving Institution and over half of the student population are first generation college students. Successful candidates must have the ability to work with a diverse urban population and be sensitive to the educational needs of students. Demonstrated intellectual contributions linked to diversity, inclusion and/or inclusive excellence may include experience in multicultural, diversity and power and privilege practice, and/or demonstrated experience successfully teaching, mentoring, and advising diverse, underserved students, including students of color and non-traditional students.

About the Department of Counseling at UTSA

Housed within the College of Education and Human Development, the Department of Counseling offers CACREP-accredited Master of Science (M.S.) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Master of Education (M.Ed.) in School Counseling, as well as a CACREP- accredited Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision (Ph.D.). The M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program won the Robert Frank Outstanding Counselor Education Program Award in 2011 and 2019. The Department of Counseling houses the Journal of Creativity of Mental Health, as well as several programs such as the Bilingual Counseling Certificate, the Neurofeedback training program, and the integrated behavioral health PITCH Expanded Providers Program. The Department of Counseling is comprised of nine full-time tenure/tenure-track and five fixed-term faculty members. The faculty actively engage in research and publications and have also been active in professional service at the national and state levels, serving in numerous leadership roles (e.g., President) within the American Counseling Association and its divisions and Chi Sigma Iota.

Responsibilities
Conducting and publishing research in counseling journals; teaching master's and doctoral courses primarily in clinical mental health counseling and counselor education and supervision, offered in the daytime and evening, at either the UTSA Downtown Campus, Main Campus or virtually; writing grant proposals; collaborating with colleagues; advising students; providing leadership on department committees/programs; mentoring junior faculty; and performing service activities.

Salary
Salary and supporting start-up packages are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. UTSA offers an attractive package of benefits including medical and dental coverage plus a choice of participation in the Teacher Retirement System or an Optional Retirement System.

Hours per Week
Exempt Position: 40 hours per week.

Required Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in Counselor Education or a related field that meets CACREP standards for core counseling faculty;
  • Clear and strong counselor and/or counselor educator identity;
  • A demonstrated record of teaching excellence and robust and high impact research;
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion and diversity;
  • The ability and desire to work collegially with faculty from diverse cultural backgrounds;
  • The ability to work with, and be sensitive to, the educational needs of students from a diverse urban population: and
  • Experience working in a CACREP-accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Mentorship of graduate students and early career faculty;
  • A record of external funding;
  • A record of departmental, institutional, and professional service and leadership;
  • Experience with external and community partners;
  • Intellectual contributions in the areas of diversity and inclusion and prior experience teaching and mentoring students from diverse cultural backgrounds;
  • Community engagement with diverse and/or underserved populations;
  • Expertise in quantitative methodology;
  • Spanish speaking.

Working Conditions
Work Modality:

On Campus: Primary work location will be on the downtown UTSA campus. Parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
