Division Head Nephrology

Job Summary:

The Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health seeks a dynamic and innovative full-time Professor or Associate Professor, Clinician-Educator to lead its Division of Nephrology.

The Division Head will provide strategic and operational leadership with responsibility and accountability across the full range of mission areas. The successful candidate will partner with colleagues from the School of Medicine and Public Health, UW Health and clinical partners, and UW-Madison, which was recently ranked the 14th best public institution by U.S. News & World Report. The successful applicant will participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. They will provide direction for maintaining and growing clinical, educational and research programs that span the breadth of the field; guide faculty development; participate in the clinical teaching of medical students, residents and fellows; and mentor faculty, trainees and medical students.

The Division of Nephrology's 20 physicians and 15 APPs provide a complete range of consultative, diagnostic and treatment services for patients locally and across Wisconsin and Illinois. The scope of clinical care encompasses all stages of kidney disease from the earliest detectable changes in kidney function through end-stage renal disease and the full range of conditions, including chronic kidney disease, kidney stone disease, glomerular disease, autoimmune disorders and inherited disorders such as polycystic kidney disease. Division faculty provide pre- and post-transplant care for patients in the UW Health kidney and kidney-pancreas transplant programs, among the most active and successful in the country. Pioneers in interventional nephrology, they lead a multidisciplinary vascular access program that performs approximately 1000 procedures per year and is a regional referral center. The division's academic success has led to philanthropic endowments and recognition by U.S. News & World Report.

To fulfill the critical mission of training the next generation of nephrologists, the division offers a robust nephrology fellowship program fully accredited by the ACGME, plus advanced fellowship programs in interventional and transplant nephrology.

The division's active research program focuses on clinical, translational and basic research in nephrology and transplantation. With over $1 million in grants in FY21, division faculty conduct numerous ongoing studies across the translational spectrum of kidney disease and had 75 publications in 2020.

The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and the University of Wisconsin system. Responsibilities:

The Division Chief will provide strategic and operational leadership with responsibility over all aspects of the division's operations across all missions (clinical, teaching, research, and service). The position will assess needs, develop, implement and evaluate strategies to advance strategic priorities in all missions, as well as faculty career progression according to the UW Madison School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) and UW-Madison Appointment and Promotion Criteria. The position will promote and support the advancement of a diverse faculty, on all tracks, and a welcoming environment for students, faculty and staff.

This position will provide strong leadership in administering all operations directly or through delegation. This position will work collaboratively with Department of Medicine central administration and division administrator, vice chairs and other leaders in the Department of Medicine, and leadership of UW School of Medicine and Public Health, UW Health and its partners, and the Department of Veterans' Affairs.

The incumbent will be expected to provide clinical patient care as an nephrologist.. The successful candidate is expected to provide strong clinical operations leadership, increase the research portfolio within the Division of Nephrology, preferably in the areas of basic and translational research and provide support for the nationally recognized education program.

The successful candidate will teach medical students, residents, and fellows. The successful applicant will participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.

Qualifications:

Candidate must be an acknowledged academic physician with demonstrated excellence in research, education and clinical care.

Must possess a record of scholarly achievements, outstanding leadership skills, professionalism and ability to develop interdisciplinary, collaborative programs.

Candidates for Professor or Associate Professor rank must meet criteria for appointment per UW School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for appointment and promotion on the Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) track.

Completion of an accredited fellowship training program in Nephrology is required.

Must be Board Eligible or Board Certified in Nephrology.
