Job Summary:

The UW MIA Recovery and Identification Project within the UW-Madison Biotechnology Center (UWBC) seeks an ambitious and highly motivated Scientist I to support the UW MIA Project research and mission activities. The Project is housed within the UWBC, which serves as a vibrant and collegial environment for inclusive and collaborative science and research services. The Center and the University are located in Madison, WI, a thriving research environment.

This position will work as a part of the UW MIA team leading, developing, and implementing MIA recovery operations and scientific advancements as the lead archaeologist and scientific recovery expert (SRE). This individual will assist and be directed to lead in MIA recovery research objectives (biological and non-biological), development of research methodologies, advancements of current technologies, and present at national meetings and conferences. The individual will write or assist in writing grant applications, proposals, and direct opportunities to secure funding for the UW MIA Research objectives. This individual will be the subject matter expert in recovery logistics and operations. This individual will collect and analyze mission and research data, in and out of the field. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to site analysis, planning, geophysical procedures and outcomes, excavation processes, sampling, site team management, and overall site security.

Responsibilities: Identifies research problems, designs research methodologies, performs research, and helps to prepare the results for presentation to professional organizations or for scholarly publications to help advance research.
  • 30% Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • 25% Collects and analyzes research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility
  • 10% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • 25% Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • 5% Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • 5% Serves as a main point of contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholders providing information and representing the interests of a specialized research area

Education:

Required
Terminal Degree
PhD in anthropology or archaeology preferred.

Qualifications:

Well-qualified applicants will have the following required experience:

-Five or more years of experience in archaeology, scientific excavations, site management, field research, communications, national and international relations, or related field is required.

-Experience coordinating and leading field excavations and research sampling.

-Experience managing large, complex projects. Experience coordinating the work of diverse teams, including developing timelines and delegating tasks.

-Experience with educating and leading student teams.

-Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with community members, national and international delegates, and researchers.

Well-qualified applicants will have the following preferred experience:

-Superb written and oral communication skills.

-Excellent organizational skills.

-Ability to follow research protocols or other detailed procedures consistently and accurately, with a high level of attention to detail.

-Evidence of being a quick learner, motivation to develop new skills.

-Ability to meet deadlines and initiate tasks without close supervision.

-Experience using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to learn new software tools.

Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 50% - 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $48,814 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The minimum salary for a Scientist I position is $48,814 annually. Salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

Additional Information:
