Upward Bound is a U.S. Department of Education TRiO funded program. The UW-Stevens Point Upward Bound Program serves eligible low-income, first-generation-to-go-to-college students in central and northern Wisconsin. The program aims to generate the skills and motivation necessary for students to enter into and complete a postsecondary education after high school.

JOB DETAILS:


Position Summary


This is a temporary six-week summer teaching position for high school students in the Upward Bound Program. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has hosted the Upward Bound Program for over 55 years. It is a high school college-prep program and part of the Federal TRIO Grant Programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education. All participants are either first-generation (i.e. parents do not have a 4-year degree) and/or low-income students, grades nine through twelve. The Upward Bound Program hosts student-participants from six target high schools in five counties from Central and Northcentral Wisconsin.


Schedule: 9am-4pm Monday-Friday. Hours vary based on course offerings.


QUALIFICATIONS:


Required Qualifications


  • Enrollment in an accredited institution of postsecondary education pursuing a degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Education or related field
  • Minimum 3 years of completed college level course work in biology or similar science related field
  • Minimum 3 years of course work in education, teaching practicum and/or training in pursuit of a teaching certification
  • Experience teaching or leading science related programs
  • Ability to teach basic courses to high school students to enhance participant competency in the areas of science, specifically Biology


Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor¿s degree in biology or other science related field
  • Teacher certification in a science related field
  • Demonstrated experience working with low-income, first-generation students and their families.
  • Federal TRiO Program experience

Terms of Employment


This is an Academic Staff hourly temporary, 6-week appointment contingent upon federal grant funding, non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

UW-Stevens Point does not offer H-1B or other work authorization visa sponsorship for this position.
