Position Summary:

Direct and manage the Hospitals Life Safety planning, systems, operations and testing. Represent UNMH interests with other UNM and local Life Safety organizations. Coordinate and approve Life Safety systems to be installed or modified with building construction and modification project planning. Coordinate, develop, implement, and monitor the Hospitals Safety Program. Develop and implement policies and procedures in accordance with the Joint Commission (TJC) standards in Environment of Care (EOC), Safety, and Hazardous Materials Management. Conduct risk analysis surveys and incident investigations to identify and make recommendations for the correction of unsafe conditions for patients, employees and visitors. Oversee the organization and effectiveness of the facilities Environment of Care Committee. Oversee and manage the product recall process. Foster a supportive environment promoting employee participation, cooperation and professional growth. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. No patient care assignment.

Detailed Responsibilities:

  • POLICY & PROCEDURE - Develop and recommend Safety and Life Safety policies, procedures and programs to ensure departmental and program effectiveness
  • STANDARDS - Develop and implement work standards to ensure Safety effectiveness and in compliance with TJC Environment of Care guidelines
  • REPORTS - Prepare periodic reports on Safety programs and Life Safety Systems as required, report regularly on work orders and action plans, departmental operational expenses and staff-hour usage
  • SAFETY PLANNING - Direct and manage the Hospitals Safety planning, systems, operations and testing
  • SAFETY PLANS - Approve Life Safety plans submitted by architects and engineers under contract to UNMH; provide answers of a technical nature from contractors while construction is in progress, approve shop drawings, recommend actions regarding substitution of materials or changes from original contract requirements for the phases of construction projects
  • FIRE PROTECTION - Perform Life Safety systems tests to ensure successful systems operation and integration
  • COORDINATION - Represent UNMH interests with other UNM and local Fire and Safety organizations; coordinate and approve fire systems to be installed or modified with building construction and modification project planning
  • PROGRAMS - Develop, implement, administer and modify Life Safety protection operations, maintenance, programs effectively utilizing staff and materials; inspect fire systems for compliance with standards, codes and regulations
  • INSPECTIONS - Coordinate and plan Safety systems recurring maintenance and inspections; plan, prioritize and oversee repairs, renovation, and new construction minimizing disruption of operations; make various inspections
  • RESOURCES - Develop, implement, administer, and modify programs and budget to maintain fire protection maintenance, installation and renovations through effective utilization of personnel and materials
  • PERFORMANCE - Manage and establish performance goals; allocate resources and assess policies for direct subordinates
  • SERVICE - Attend and serve on professional/civic service organizations as a UNM Hospitals representative
  • COMMITTEES AND MEETINGS - Participate in hospital/medical staff meetings and committees as required
  • SUPERVISION - Develop efficient organizational structure. Supervise employees and select, terminate, train, educate, correct deficiencies, perform appraisals, issue discipline, counsel, schedule work assignments; encourage staff teamwork and growth initiatives
  • BUDGET - Develop and administer the division's annual budget; monitor and approve expenditures
  • DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
  • EOC - Develop and approved Environment of Care Management plans to include Safety, Fire Safety, Hazardous Materials and Waste Management plans
  • SAFETY PROGRAMS - Develop, implement, administer and modify Safety programs and compliance designed to manage risks in the environment of care, including but not limited to environmental tours, accident/injury investigation, hazardous materials handling and spills, staff training/education, exposure monitoring, defective device tracking/reporting, preconstruction risk assessments and fire drills

  • Certified Healthcare Safety Professional w/in 1 year

Nonessential:

  • Professional Registered Engineer, Fire Protection

Physical Conditions:

Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
