TITLE: High School Dean of Students
LOCATION: Urbana High School
SUPERVISOR: This position reports directly to the Urbana High School Assistant Principal.
JOB SUMMARY: The responsibility of the Dean of Students is to oversee and assist the Assistant Principal with all matters associated with student attendance, discipline, and supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Provide leadership and direction in matters associated with student discipline and enforcement of the school attendance policy at the high school.
- Participate and actively prepare and present student and staff orientation programs regarding the School District's student attendance and student discipline policies.
- Initiate phone calls and home visits to parents/guardians to address student attendance and tardiness issues.
- Maintain and continuously update District records associated with student attendance, excused and unexcused absences, tardiness, and contacts made with parents/guardians regarding attendance issues.
- Attend meetings as necessary addressing student attendance and student discipline matters, including those associated with the Student Assistance Team and special education staffing.
- Assist with securing proof of student physical examinations required for attendance. Prepare reports, as needed, regarding attendance and suspension statistics, referral analysis, and class activities.
- Respond to student discipline referrals within the high school.
- Maintain and continuously update District records associated with student discipline matters, including referrals, suspensions, and expulsions.
- Conduct student/parent/guardian staff disciplinary conferences as necessary, including conferences associated with the re-entry of a student into the School District.
- Maintain and continuously update district records associated with student discipline and contact with parents/guardians regarding disciplinary issues.
- Ensures the safety and well-being of students, stakeholders, staff, and teachers on a daily basis.
- Encourages positive relationships with students, stakeholders, staff and the community towards building a cohesive foundation in learning and behaviors.
- Engages in positive dialogs with parents, stakeholders and staff while implementing the MTSS ground work.
- Supervise the high school building and campus in the following areas: hallways before and after school and during passing periods, exit areas after school, the cafeteria, student lockers, the after-school detention program as needed, extracurricular activities and disaster drills, fire drills, and any other emergency situations at the high school and the parking lot as directed by the Assistant Principal.
- Work cooperatively with law enforcement, the juvenile court system, and state and local agencies on student discipline and attendance matters.
- Supervise extracurricular activities as needed, as determined by the assistant principal, including dances, parties, class trips, and meetings.
- Work cooperatively with class sponsors on fundraising activities.
- Maintain a professional awareness of laws, regulations, and policies associated with student discipline, attendance, and residency by having a working knowledge of state and federal law, District policies, and state and federal administrative rules and regulations.
- Work cooperatively with the Assistant Principal to address issues associated with student residency issues, including those that arise at the time of enrollment and/or after enrollment.
- Communicate with parents/guardians and students and address concerns as they arise.
- Participate in district-level meetings and activities as directed by the High School Principal and/or Assistant Principal.
- Perform any and all additional duties as assigned by the Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools, High School Principal, and Assistant High School Principal
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution required
- Master’s Degree preferred
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 3 years of successful experience in teaching
- Valid Illinois License with Administrative Endorsement, Type 75, or equivalent preferred
- Preference for bilingual ability, although not required
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with various individuals, including District staff, parents/guardians, law enforcement, and state and community agencies.
- Ability to handle and oversee multiple job duties all at once.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to communicate with students and assist them with resolving nonacademic issues that interfere with them attaining educational and extracurricular opportunities.
- Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to maintain consistency in addressing student issues.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student records and issues.
LICENSES/CREDENTIAL: Valid Illinois Teaching License in high school education with administrative endorsement
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Salary and Benefit information can be found on the Human Resources webpage. There are many opportunities for employees to earn additional compensation (stipends, differentials, extra duty pay, etc.) during the regular school year and in the summer.
- This is a position within the collective bargaining unit and is not an administrative position.
- This is an exempt position.
- Student Contact Days and other days stipulated on the work calendar in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on the evaluation of professional personnel using the district's evaluation tool.
