What are the responsibilities and job description for the Intern, Baseball Systems and Analytics position at USA Baseball?
As the Baseball Systems and Analytics Intern, you will report to the Coordinator of Systems and Analytics. This internship at USA Baseball is an essential role within the Technology and Analytics Department, supporting both the Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP) and USA Baseball’s development and national team programs.
The PDP is a collaborative effort between USA Baseball and the Commissioner’s Office that establishes an official identification and player development pathway for amateur baseball players in the United States. Athletes participating in the PDP undergo unique baseball and athletic assessments using state of the art technology as a part of the most comprehensive evaluative experience in any sport. This position will be responsible for organizing aggregate data from PDP evaluations and unifying various digital resources and assets to create personalized Player Reports sent to all participating athletes.
Additionally, The Baseball Systems & Analytics intern will support a range of USA Baseball player identification and development programs and initiatives. USA Baseball’s National Training Complex (NTC) in Cary, N.C. is equipped with the latest Trackman V3 radar and data collection capabilities. The Trackman radar system allows USA Baseball to enhance its evaluation and selection processes as well as assist in player development and training by adding in individual pitch and hit tracking data. This internship position will work with both large and small datasets to build player reports, identify trends, support player identification and selection processes, and develop tools to enhance USA Baseball’s implementation and understanding of athlete performance data.

POSITION DETAILS

- Based in Cary, NC with a fully dedicated workstation during standard business hours

IN THIS ROLE
- You will aggregate and analyze athlete performance data to support player evaluation and development efforts.
- You will create and distribute personalized Player Reports for PDP participants, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
- You will query databases, clean datasets, and generate insights to assist in athlete identification and program improvement.
- You will develop dashboards and tools to monitor data quality and identify areas for improvement.
- You will communicate with athletes, families, and stakeholders to coordinate logistics and share reports.
- You will operate and manage advanced baseball technology systems like TrackMan and Rapsodo to support data collection, analysis, and player evaluation.
- You will suggest and implement improvements for analytics processes and reporting systems.
- You will attend events to manage technology and gather data, contributing to USA Baseball’s player development initiatives.
- You will manage and operate USA Baseball's TrackMan systems.
QUALIFICATIONS
- You are currently pursuing or have recently completed a bachelor’s degree in computer science, statistics, communications, technology, or a related field.
- You are proficient in coding languages such as R and Python, with experience building dashboards or visualizations in R Shiny and R Markdown.
- You have a strong interest in sports science, data analytics, player development, and player safety initiatives, paired with a passion for baseball.
- You demonstrate strong organizational and analytical skills, with the ability to streamline and interpret diverse data sets.
- You possess advanced quantitative analysis and computing skills.
- You are proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive.
- You exhibit a positive attitude and thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- You can relocate to the Raleigh/Durham/Cary, NC area for the duration of the internship.
- You can successfully complete a background check prior to employment.
Preferred
- You have prior experience with Rapsodo, Diamond Kinetics, Trackman, or similar baseball technologies.
- You have experience supporting a team or coaching staff within a data analytics department.
- You are skilled in processing, editing, and sharing high-speed video clips.
- You can effectively utilize emerging technologies in baseball to achieve team goals.
