About the Utah Olympic Park 

Built for the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games, the Utah Olympic Park (UOP) is a dynamic multi-use facility with Nordic ski jumps, sliding tracks, a 2002 Winter Games museum, and a multitude of adventure activities.  As a part of the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation, our mission is to cultivate champions in sport and in life, deliver experiences that inspire communities, and celebrate our Olympic legacy for generations to come.  

 

About the role 

  • The Lead Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the UOP summer camp, ensuring the safety, enjoyment, and growth of all campers. The Lead Counselor will manage and guide two camp staff members in the planning, organization, and execution of daily camp activities. The camp runs for six weeks, Tuesday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day. Camp season: June 17 –20, 24 – 27, July 8 – 11, 15 –18,29 - 1 and Aug. 5 – 8 

 

Major Tasks and Responsibilities 

 

 

Staff Management: 

  • Supervise and manage two camp staff members, providing leadership, direction, support, and guidance. 

  • Manage weekly camp check-ins to ensure tasks are being completed and all areas of camp operations are running smoothly. 

  • Foster a positive, supportive environment for staff, addressing any concerns and ensuring team morale remains high. 

 

Camper Supervision

  • Supervise children aged 7-12 years old from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM during camp hours, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times. 

  • Actively engage with campers in all activities, ensuring their participation, well-being, and that no child is left unattended. 

  • Help campers with extra needs, manage disinterested children, and offer assistance to those needing to leave activities for any reason. 

  • Monitor camper behavior and take corrective actions as needed to maintain a safe and positive camp environment. 

 

Activity Coordination: 

  • Organize and lead campers to daily activities at the UOP, such as the ropes course, zip lines, and tubing. 

  • Coordinate and implement age-appropriate camp activities and programs according to the weekly schedule. 

  • Ensure that activities are run safely, efficiently, and enjoyably for all campers. 

  • Supervise and guide campers during off-site activities, including transport to local destinations (when over 21) and during activities hosted by sport vendors. 

  • Ensure that staff is actively involved in all activities, providing hands-on assistance and leadership. 

 

Safety and Well-being: 

  • Monitor and manage camper safety during activities, meals, free time, and transitions between activities. 

  • Ensure that campers are regularly hydrated, wearing sunscreen, and following nutritional guidelines as per camp policy. 

  • Be vigilant about environmental factors, ensuring campers take necessary precautions to remain safe in varying weather conditions. 

 

Communication: 

  • Communicate effectively with campers, staff, and parents, addressing any concerns, needs, or questions in a timely and professional manner. 

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the camp director, sport vendors, and other stakeholders, ensuring smooth communication and coordination. 

  • Provide parents with updates on their child’s experience and well-being at camp, maintaining an open line of communication. 

  • Training & Compliance: 

  • Complete all required in-house training prior to the start of camp and participate in any additional training throughout the season. 

  • Follow all camp policies, procedures, and guidelines, ensuring the safety and success of the camp program. 

  • All other job responsibilities as assigned. 

 

Candidate Knowledge and Essential Skills 

  • Previous experience in a camp or youth-oriented role is preferred. 

  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. 

  • Ability to supervise, motivate, and engage children aged 7-12 years. 

  • Ability to manage and mentor camp staff. 

  • Certification in CPR and First Aid preferred. 

  • Safe Sport Certification 

  • Must be 21 years or older to drive campers to offsite activities. 

  • Knowledge of child development, safety, and group management. 

  • Ability to actively participate in all activities and ensure the well-being of all campers. 

 

Minimum Requirements 

  • Experience working with children. 

  • Ability to play games with children. 

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds. 

  • Ability to work outdoors in all temperature/weather extremes. 

  • Ability to stand on feet for extended periods of time. 

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. 

  • Hearing – to converse with others in a normal conversation. 

  • Balancing, bending, climbing, kneeling, walking, pushing, reaching above shoulders, and sitting.
