Velocity Rail Solutions, Inc. is a growing railroad services company recently acquired by a private equity firm. Due to this transaction and the anticipated growth, the company needs an experienced and strategic Corporate Controller to lead the company’s accounting operations. This role is integral to ensuring the company’s financial health, compliance with accounting standards, and the successful achievement of our long-term financial goals. The ideal candidate possesses excellent technical accounting acumen, exceptional communication skills, advanced Excel proficiency, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective leadership qualities.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Oversee general accounting functions, ensuring accuracy and adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Manage the monthly closing process and prepare timely financial statements.
- Develop, implement, and monitor accounting policies and procedures.
- Lead the preparation and coordination of the annual financial audit.
- Stay informed of and implement changes related to new accounting pronouncements.
Cash & Asset Management
- Oversee cash management and forecasting to ensure optimal liquidity and financial stability.
- Manage fixed asset and lease accounting processes.
Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure compliance with lender reporting requirements and monitor credit agreement covenant adherence.
- Prepare financial reports for the private equity firm, lenders, and other stakeholders.
- Collaborate on tax planning strategies and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations.
Accounting Operations Oversight
- Supervise and provide guidance to the credit & accounts receivable, billing, and accounts payable teams.
- Drive process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
Qualifications & Competencies
Experience: 10–15 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5 years in a supervisory role.
o Previous experience as a public accounting manager, a corporate controller or a similar role.
o Private equity portfolio company experience and experience in transportation, especially in the rail industry, a plus.
Technical Accounting Expertise: Strong knowledge of GAAP, fixed asset accounting, lease accounting, treasury management and tax compliance.
Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA designation strongly preferred).
Skills:
o Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
o Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
o Proven ability to work independently and make critical financial decisions.
o Proficiency in accounting software (NetSuite, MS Dynamics, etc.).
o Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
Leadership: Demonstrated experience in managing and developing accounting teams.
