What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vestavia Methodist Day School Director position at Vestavia Methodist Day School?
PURPOSE: The Director of Vestavia Methodist Day School shall be a well-trained professional who demonstrates a commitment to Jesus Christ and the mission of Vestavia Hills Methodist Church. The Director will seek to fulfill this mission by strengthening the Day School and providing a clear and accessible bridge from the community to the church, while working in a team with the pastoral staff for that purpose. The Director shall possess the administrative skills necessary to perform his or her duties; as well as the interpersonal and relational skills for working with parents, teachers, and children.
SCOPE: All aspects of the Vestavia Methodist Day School
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt, Regular Full-Time
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Day School Director will focus on five primary areas:
1) Manage the administrative and financial functions of the Day School.
a) Monitor and maintain adherence to all local and state rules, regulations and license requirements for all areas of the program.
b) Develop, propose, and administer policies and procedures.
c) Ensure a safe, clean, and nurturing environment for staff and children.
d) Work with the Director of Food Ministries to ensure nutritious meals and snacks.
e) Conduct staff meetings regularly or as needed.
f) Work with the Director of Finance to develop and control all budgetary matters pertaining to the Day School.
g) Work with the HR Coordinator to oversee Day School payroll.
h) Make recommendations to the Day School Advisory Board for any changes to tuition, fees, policies, and scheduled days of operation.
i) Supervise yearly registration, assess class needs, and student placement.
j) Set the Day School calendar.
k) Meet with prospective families and offer tours of school.
l) Supervise and review the ordering of all supplies and equipment and maintain an accurate inventory.
m) Organize and supervise parent orientation, meet-the-teacher, etc..
2) Continually develop appropriate curriculum/programming for each age level.
a) Stay abreast of current best practices and research latest developments in early childhood education and make recommendations for change in curriculum and programs.
b) Attend professional conferences for continued education and share what you learn with staff.
c) Continue to vertically align curriculum between age groups.
d) Contact local kindergartens yearly to ensure our students have the necessary skills to be successful at the next level of their education.
e) Nurture relationships with special services providers (Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Bell Center, Hand in Hand, and Vestavia Special Services Departments) in order to connect parents to these services if needed.
f) Ensure that faith development, Christian values, Biblical stories, and Methodist beliefs/doctrines are a regular part of the Day School program.
3) Hire, develop, and support the Day School teachers and staff.
a) Recruit, interview and select new staff members.
b) Plan and facilitate training for new and returning staff members each year.
c) Plan professional development programs before school starts and during the school year that correspond with specific needs, current trends, or aspects of our curriculum; this may include bringing in outside speakers.
d) Confer as requested with teachers to solve specific problems they face with students and/or curriculum questions.
e) Serve as a confidante to teachers about school or family issues.
f) Keep the Day School Parent and Teacher Handbooks up to date.
g) Support teachers in parent conferences when needed.
h) Conduct yearly evaluations of staff performance which includes classroom observations and conferences with each staff member.
4) Maintain a Christian environment within the Day School.
a) Prepare chapel schedule with topics and find/assign leaders for chapel.
b) Encourage teachers to share prayer concerns and/or be prayer warriors for others.
c) Provide the programs with spiritual leadership by demonstrating and discussing your personal faith.
5) Serve as a bridge between the Day School, the church, and the community.
a) Attend weekly staff meetings.
b) Provide regular reports to the church Leadership Team and the Day School Advisory Board.
c) Work to strengthen the relationship between families in the Day School and the Church. Helping those families to become more engaged in the ministries of the church.
d) Stay in contact with PreSchool and Elementary Directors to strengthen and align ministries.
e) Work with the Discipleship Pathway staff to offer ideas and assistance and to connect the Day School to the church. Take advantage of Day School / Church connections at Advent, Lent, VBC, Fall Festival, etc.).
f) Develop and execute a marketing/awareness program to connect those in the community with the church and Day School.
g) Find ways to incorporate the Day School Ministries into the life and ministry of VHMC, and to further connect VMDS parents and staff into the life and ministry of the church.
h) Ensure that the Day School is working within the larger mission of the church
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Report to: Executive Pastor
Supervise: Assistant Director(s), Administrative Assistant, Bookkeeper, Teachers, and Teacher Aids.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. A bachelor's degree of some type is required, along with training accomplished to be a Director of a DHR licensed program.
2. At least two years of working experience as a child care worker/teacher.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Able to move through the facilities of the church and Day School.
2. Able to lift up to the weight of a five-year-old child.
3. Kneeling, crouching, stooping, reaching, standing, sitting, changing floors
4. Visual acuity - close and distant vision and ability to focus with or without correction.
5. Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
6. Hearing - perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction
7. Able to follow all wellness and safety protocols.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Experience in leadership in a DHR licensed day care center is preferred.
2. Availability to participate in occasional events on Sunday Morning, Wednesday night, or other times in order to promote the ministry of the VMDS.
3. Ability, along with all VMDS administrative staff, to be the “face” of the church in the Day School and the “face” of the Day School in the church.
4. Ability to relate well to children and parents.
5. Ability to lead staff in ministry (includes motivation, communications, goal setting, and creating a positive Christian work atmosphere).
6. Ability to work as a team member.
7. Ability to prioritize and manage all responsibilities well.
8. Ability to manage all direct reports well (includes hiring, communications, evaluations, accountability, assistance when needed, and terminations when necessary).
