Description
Incumbent serves as 4-H Program Assistant for the Vigo County Extension Office, responsible for providing, producing and/or coordinating ideas and solutions for publications, presentations and projects to support the mission of Purdue Extension and 4-H program needs.

Examples of Duties
- Assist office staff and Extension Educators in coordinating extension programs, including identifying program needs, setting priorities, suggesting methods, and evaluating existing programs. Assist in planning programs and implementing plan of work.
- Assist with 4-H program as requested by 4-H/Youth Development Educator, including assisting with preparation of 4-H Terms & Conditions and development and production of 4-H newsletter and news releases concerning the 4-H program.
- Assist with planning and implementing 4-H activities and events such as, 4-H Performing Arts, 4-H Camp, Junior Leaders, Mini 4-H and 4-H workshops.
- Assist with volunteer staff development, including identifying new leaders, recruitment, orientation, training, and recognition of adult leaders and committee members, and 4-H officer training for club officers.
- Cooperate with school officials and teachers to provide and teach 4-H school enrichment programs and Ag Day.
- Attend various organizational meetings, make presentations to members/leaders of clubs, and assist with coordinating various programs and events.
- Enter 4-H enrollment forms in the 4-H database and make sure all information is entered correctly. Compile reports on enrollment using various software packages. Use reports to promote Purdue Extension throughout the county.
- Answers telephone and greets office visitors, providing information, distribute reference education bulletin, directs/transfers calls to appropriate department or individual, and takes messages in the absence of office manager and secretary.
- Communicate with other Extension Office personnel and other resources as requested, using electronic mail and fax and maintain an electronic calendar.
- Maintain inventory of 4-H supplies, manuals and literature, and ordering as needed.
- Assists with annual State Fair participation as needed.
- Assist with various duties for annual county 4-H fair, including planning and implementing activities, contacting judges, preparing judges sheets, results, show bills, and auction sheets.
- Attend office staff and other meetings as required.
- Perform related duties as assigned by educators.
Typical Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Knowledge of departmental functions and office procedures and ability to use standard modern office equipment, including by not limited to computer, fax, typewriter, calculator, folding machine, cameras, projection equipment, copy machines, duplicator, scanner, and other equipment as assigned.
- Knowledge of Standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation. Ability to proofread materials, detect errors and apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, operations and public speaking engagements.
- Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.
- Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other county departments, program participants, non-profit organizations, Purdue University and the general public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
- Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.
- Ability to work with others in a team environment.
- Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions.
- Ability to maintain accurate and organized files/records and collect, compile, and compare data.

Supplemental Information
Incumbent performs a variety of standard duties according to the established practices and procedures of department, using judgment and taking personal action in determination and implementation of best methods to achieve desired results. Errors in decision or accuracy of work are readily detected by procedural safeguards or through supervisory review of work. Undetected errors may result in loss of time to correct error and/or inconvenience to department employees or general public.
Incumbent receives general instructions and performs majority of tasks according to own schedule and seasonal deadlines with work reviewed upon completion for accuracy and compliance with accepted procedures.
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other county departments, program participants, non-profit organizations, Purdue University, and the general public for purposes of exchanging information and rendering service.
Incumbent reports directly to 4-H Youth Educator and/or County Extension Director.
Incumbent performs duties in a standard office environment, involving sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects, keyboarding, hearing communication and speaking clearly. Incumbent works in extreme hot and/or cold temperatures and walks on uneven terrain.
Incumbent is occasionally required to work extended hours, evening, weekends, and travel out of town, sometimes overnight.
