Job Summary:
The Civilian Jury Bailiff provides for the care of jurors and other Court officials of Vilas County. This position is designated by the Clerk of Court, in consultation with the Presiding Circuit Court Judge, and serves at the discretion of these supervisors.
As a liaison between the courts and the public, a jury bailiff should properly reflect the duties and office of the court as to maintain the respect and dignity of the judicial branch of government. A jury bailiff serves as an important link between the court, the jurors and the public. While court is in session, the bailiff will assist the judge and jurors and assure compliance within strict guidelines and procedures of the court.
This is a temporary position which requires a great deal of flexibility regarding the work schedule due to last-minute cancellation. Short notifications to report to work and occasionally work beyond the normal closing time of 4:00 PM. Additionally, jury trials can vary in length from one to five days or longer. This position will be used as an on-call position only, with no guaranteed hours or schedule.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Attends to the needs of jurors including when sequestered and escorts jurors to and from the courtroom.
2. Communicates with and assists all courtroom personnel as needed to conduct a jury trial.
3. Maintains an orderly and secure courtroom in conjunction with sworn court security officers (if present).
4. Supervises and directs jurors during lunch and other breaks, as allowed.
5. Maintains a clean, orderly and well-supplied jury room.
6. Guards the jury room door during deliberations.
7. All other duties as assigned.
WORK REQUIREMENTS AND CHARACTERISTICS:
A. Education/Knowledge:
High School Diploma or Equivalent - Required
B. Required Work Experience:
In addition to Education - previous courtroom or law enforcement experience preferred.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED TO PERFORM POSITION:
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, court personnel, and the public.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of court cases and materials.
- Ability to remain impartial.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and sit.
- Ability to sit for long periods during a jury trial.
- Ability to see clearly and hear well within the courtroom setting.
- Ability to adapt well to changing work situations.
