Job Overview:
The Village of Menands is now accepting applications for the position of Deputy Court Clerk to assist in the completion of clerical work for Village Court. The hiree is responsible for processing a very high volume of documents resulting from the issuance of citations, accusatory instruments and other documents relating to the enforcement of, Criminal Procedure Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law, Mental Health Law, Landlord-Tenant Law, Environmental Conservation Law and all other applicable laws, codes and regulations of New York State and the Village of Menands. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Village Justice and Chief Court Clerk. Primary accountabilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Managing Vehicle and Traffic (V&T) cases and civil litigation falling under the jurisdiction of the Court, including traffic tickets, small claims, summary proceedings and evictions;
- Downloading tickets and creating new V&T tickets at regular intervals using TSLED;
- Collecting, processing and issuing receipts for fines and fees;
- Establishing and maintaining payment plans made with individuals owing fines and surcharges;
- Maintaining financial records of court collections and payments received from arranged payments schedules and traffic violations and assisting with monthly reconciliations;
- Assisting the Village Justices in court during afternoon/evening criminal or Vehicle and Traffic calendars at least four (4) times per month and afternoon Landlord-Tenant and Small Claims calendars when required;
- Acting on behalf of the Chief Court Clerk in her absence;
- Assisting Village Justices in drafting and/or processing written decisions/orders;
- Providing assistance with periodic audits.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from High School and two (2) years of responsible clerical and/or secretarial work in a legal, public safety, or governmental setting. Court or court system experience is highly preferred.
The candidate should possess the following: aptitude/proficiency with computer software and data entry programs; a working knowledge of the procedures of the court system; an ability to work with professionalism and courtesy in courtroom and office environments with Village Justices, Chief Court Clerk, assistant district attorneys, law enforcement, public defenders, private attorneys representing the accused and the accused; an ability to remain calm in interactions with upset or excited individuals; excellent organizational skills; an ability to prepare and maintain accurate payment records and reports; a sense of urgency to meet deadlines; meticulousness; good judgment; honesty; and integrity.
Annual Salary: $50,000
