What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrical Laboratory Technician position at VOLT® Lighting?
VOLT Lighting is looking for a dynamic and experienced Laboratory Technician to join our team in testing and evaluating new lighting products. Your focus will be on testing and qualifying electromechanical products within various stages of the new product development process. Additionally, you will play a key role in ensuring product quality through rigorous testing, compliance checks, and collaboration with cross-functional teams. This position also includes responsibilities for handling warranty repairs as needed. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in hands-on testing procedures and quality control within a product development environment. Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist in building prototype samples for mechanical and electrical testing.
- Perform comprehensive electrical, electronic, mechanical, illumination, and environmental testing of products or components as required/requested, adhering to safe laboratory practices.
- Conduct rigorous quality control inspections to ensure compliance with design specifications, industry standards, and company requirements.
- Perform hands-on testing of equipment operating from 12V to 277V, using experimental fixtures and specialized tools.
- Operate and maintain mechanical, crimping, cutting, stripping, pulling equipment, and other laboratory machinery.
- Perform hand soldering operations of samples and prototypes as needed.
- Assist in determining and developing test requirements and specifications for products and components.
- Develop and procure equipment, supplies, and fixtures necessary for functional testing.
- Maintain detailed records of all test plans, test results, and quality control processes in designated locations.
- Generate comprehensive reports on test findings, quality metrics, and any identified deviations or failures.
- Participate in design, qualification, and problem-solving meetings as directed or requested, providing insights from a quality assurance perspective.
- Conduct internal audits to verify adherence to quality assurance practices and recommend improvements where necessary.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for improving testing procedures and product quality.
- Ensure all laboratory equipment is calibrated and functioning correctly, troubleshooting issues promptly to minimize downtime.
- Troubleshoot and repair warranty-returned products, ensuring they meet quality standards before resolution.
- Maintain the VOLT Innovation Lab in a neat, orderly, and functional state.
Skills:
- Experience with reading and interpreting 2-dimensional drawings.
- Ability to use laboratory equipment, such as soldering irons, voltmeters, amp meters, force gauges, crimping dies, and similar tools.
- Familiarity with light testing equipment such as footcandle meters, integrating spheres, and goniophotometers is a plus.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and email tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organized, process-oriented, and detail-focused.
- Proven ability to solve problems effectively and work hands-on in a fast-paced environment.
- Skilled at multitasking and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.
Education and Experience:
- Associate degree in a related field required- bachelor’s degree preferred.
- At least 2 years of progressive experience working with technical drawings and/or testing lab equipment.
- Prior experience in the lighting industry is desirable.
Physical Requirements:
- This position requires repetitive reaching, stretching, lifting, and twisting.
Work Environment:
- May be exposed to humidity, noise, odors, and dust.
- Frequent exposure to electrical and mechanical hazards.
