SML North America (NA) is a part of SML and has about 1,000 employees across the United States, Canada and Mexico. We operate the Central Distribution Center in Byhalia, MS as well as Regional Distribution Centers across the NA region.
Mission/Purpose of the Position
In this role, you will lead the communications function across all SML NA sites with a focus on driving business performance and employee engagement. You are a member of the regional SML Management Team as well as a member of the Global SML Communications Team, as well as a part of various other communications networks within Volvo. You will translate business needs, plans and strategies into clear, inspiring, engaging, and result-driving communications. You will create and execute on communication plan activities and events, both to internal employees and external stakeholders. You will make a major contribution in supporting the full Volvo Group business across North America by driving awareness, understanding, and buy-in of key deliverables and strategic direction.
Ideally you are an experienced professional with a proven track record within communications, mastering both internal and external communications in a highly matrixed and multi-brand environment. You have passion for communication, and a drive to constantly develop value-adding communication tailored to your target groups supporting defined business needs. You have prior experience in taking strategies into implementation, preferably in a fast-paced industrial environment. In this role, you will be a true connector, and therefore you have the ability to form trustful and cross-functional relationships both within and outside of Service Market Logistics. You make things happen and swiftly move between strategic and more hands-on operational work. You are a people-focused leader and realize our employees are the conduit to business success.

Essential Functions
- Establish and drive a multi-channel communications strategy for the North America region aimed at both internal (i.e. employees) and external (i.e. dealers) audience groups.
- Deliver proactive and timely execution of major communication efforts, such as business updates or strategy communications, internal town halls, dealer information sessions, stakeholder/customer events, and employee engagement events/initiatives.
- Interpret and effectively communicate business decisions and strategies to ensure employee understanding and engagement.
- Drive employee engagement and recognition in both industrial and office environments.
- Manage the development and implementation of the communications calendar across the region to drive business needs and strategic objectives.
- Be an ambassador to the Volvo Group culture as both a role model and driver of our values.
- Proactively work with leaders and key regional stakeholders to improve the organization’s overall communications competence through coaching and training.
- Take the lead with crisis communication and stakeholder perception management on sensitive issues.
- Serve as the subject matter exert for branding and identity across the business within North America.
- Measure and track internal communications effectiveness.
- Participate in regional and global communications networks.
- Deploy and implement best practices within area of responsibility.
- Lead and act according to Volvo values, drive change and promote diversity.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism or a related field. Advanced/graduate degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in an industrial communications role or related communications experience.
- 5 years of supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience working with and communicating effectively to diverse audience groups; both internally and externally.
- Experience being a member of a site or regional management team is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced team environment striving towards operational excellence guided by Volvo’s Values and the Code of Conduct
Necessary Technical/Functional/Language Skills
- As all documentation is in English, proficiency in the English language is required
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to network effectively across a diverse organization and build enduring relationships across functional and geographical areas
- Strong personal integrity and credibility
- Strong communicator with good influencing skills, with the ability to create trust and cooperation in spite of cultural differences and geographical distance
- Familiarity with graphics software to create presentations for a variety of audiences
