Description

OAS Specialist for Academic Support 

Reporting to the Dean of Student Achievement & Success, the OAS Specialist for Academic Support plans, coordinates, and administers academic support services and programs for the Office of Academic Skills (OAS), including peer tutoring and course mentoring in the natural sciences, social sciences, and academic skills. In addition, the OAS Specialist for Academic Support administers academic recovery programming for at-risk students and students on academic probation. 

Salary Range: $52,000-$54,000 

Essential Functions: 

Tutoring and Academic Support Programs  

  • Plan, coordinate, and evaluate peer tutoring and course mentoring, including recruitment, selection, training, supervision, mentorship, and professional development of Office of Academic Skills peer tutors and course mentors  

  • Coordinate and administer tutor training using curriculum from College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA)  

  • Manage office budget and student payroll 

  • Manage online tutor scheduling software (WCONLINE) for the Office of Academic Skills in collaboration with other Academic Resource Offices - Quantitative Skills and Writing Centers 

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Advising and Academic Advocacy and other administrators across campus to coordinate and administer student success and retention programs, including academic recovery for at-risk students and students on academic probation 

  • Track and report data for tutoring, course mentoring, and academic recovery programming 

  • Write a comprehensive and data-informed annual report 
     

Individual Student Meetings  

  • Provide individualized academic support services to students 

  • Receive referrals from faculty and staff regarding students who may be struggling academically and conduct appropriate outreach 


Support of Office of Academic Skills Staffing  

  • Support disability services accommodation intakes 

  • Proctor accommodated testing and provide coverage for staffing in the Office of Academic Skills  

 

Additional Responsibilities 

  • Promote the Office of Academic Skills and its services to all students and faculty 

  • Order supplies and equipment for the Office of Academic Skills 

  • Coordinate activities and events with the other Academic Resource Offices 

  • Maintain relevant records and documents for programs and services 

  • Meet prospective and newly admitted students and their parents during campus visits, including some weekends (i.e., Open Houses, Summer Advising, Fall Family Weekend, etc.) 

  • Develop and coordinate academic skills seminars and presentations for students, student groups, and academic courses, e.g., student-athletes, Greek Life, and First Year Seminar courses as needed 

  • Serve on campus committees as assigned, e.g., Learning Resources Advisory Council  

  • Other tasks as required 

Qualifications


Required Qualifications and Experience 

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master’s degree preferred  

  • 3-5 years of experience in academic and student support services 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of tutoring techniques, academic support best practices, and theory-informed practice regarding student development 

Organizational Relationships 

  • Reports to the Dean of Student Achievement & Success 

Working Conditions/Hazards 

  • Indoors in a climate-controlled environment. 

Work Schedule/Hours 

  • 10-month schedule: 8:30 AM until 4:30 PM. 

  • Occasional evening or weekend hours with adjusted day schedule as needed for special events. 

Preferred Experiences 

  • Experience in selecting, training, and supervising student staff 

  • Experience with administrative technology, e.g., MS Office 365, WCONLINE 

Personal Characteristics 

  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills with attention to detail and ability to multi-task 

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal 

  • Ability to take initiative and organize time 

  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently 

  • Critical thinking and proactive problem solving 

  • Patience and desire to assist students at all levels 

  • Ability to work occasionally on a flexible schedule
