JOB SUMMARY:

The Manager of Marketing & Communications is responsible for supporting and executing marketing and communication strategies that align with HRA’s strategic plan. Reporting to the Director of Public Affairs, this role focuses on content development, media relations, brand messaging, and digital marketing to enhance HRA’s visibility and engagement with key stakeholders.

This position requires a hands-on approach, managing day-to-day marketing and communications activities, coordinating media outreach, and supporting organizational storytelling efforts. The Manager of Marketing & Communications collaborates with various teams to ensure consistency in messaging, branding, and engagement strategies.

We have two brands: HRA and St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center. This position will manage a single market (HRA) and work in collaboration with a peer managing the other brand (St. Hubert’s) to ensure overall brand consistency, under the leadership of the Director of Public Affairs.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the development and execution of marketing and communications plans that align with organizational goals.
  • Serve as media contact, responding to inquiries, drafting press releases, and coordinating interviews with spokespeople.
  • Represent the marketing & communications team in DC, including occasional public appearances on television, radio, and at events.
  • Support crisis communication efforts, working with the Director of Public Affairs to ensure timely and strategic messaging.
  • Oversee the creation of marketing and communications materials, including newsletters, social media content and website updates.
  • Manage HRA’s social media channels, ensuring engagement, mission-driven content and timely responses to audience inquiries.
  • Collaborate with teams across departments to develop compelling storytelling that enhances donor engagement and community outreach.
  • Maintain relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers, helping to increase positive coverage of HRA’s mission and programs.
  • Track and report on marketing and communications performance, analyzing data and adjusting strategies to improve effectiveness.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, public relations best practices, and emerging digital marketing strategies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted regularly, 50 pounds assisted.
  • Regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment.
  • Ability to be comfortable working with cats, dogs, small animals, reptiles, fish and wildlife.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity daily, including but not limited to lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, and bending. Regularly moves about the facilities to coordinate work. Typically stands, bends, stoops, and crouches while working special events.
  • Due to the nature of shelter work, may be exposed to deceased, fractious, or aggressive animals; common allergens; hostile or irate persons; zoonotic or other diseases; unpleasant noises, odors, or sights; and extreme temperatures.
  • Ability to respond to limited emergency site-wide outages after hours.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Basic familiarity with computers, MSWord, MS Outlook, and Microsoft Office.
  • Previous experience (5 ) in a marketing or communications role.
  • Experience in animal welfare, nonprofit, or mission-driven organizations is a plus.
  • Strong writing and editorial skills, with experience developing press releases, blog content, and social media posts.
  • Familiarity with media relations and public affairs, including experience pitching stories to journalists and responding to press inquiries.
  • Experience managing digital marketing efforts, including social media, website content, and email campaigns.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments, ensuring cohesive messaging and branding.
  • A data-driven mindset, using analytics to measure and optimize marketing and communications efforts.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple deadlines.
  • Passion for animal welfare and community engagement.
