What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical/Telemedicine Assistant - Healing Center MAT program position at Washoe Tribe of Nevada & California?

Under direct supervision the Medical Assistant provides simple and complex care to all patients in accordance with the accepted standards of approved care. Consults with the Registered Nurse and/or the Medical Doctor on patient problems, identifies uncertainty in methods of procedure, and reports all incidents that might affect patients, personnel or visitors adversely. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information. This position is located with the Healing Center MAT program.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED, and one year clerical experience or combination of education and experience as a certified Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse or 1 year experience as a Medical Assistant

  • Must be insurable through the Tribe’s medical malpractice insurance policy.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of

  • Obtaining one within thirty (30) days of employment.

  • Must possess a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification at the time of appointment.

  • Must be insurable under the Tribe’s driving insurance policy.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

  • Preference will be given to Qualified Native American Indians.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting the medical staff who provide telemedicine services and serving as a backup for other support staff functions.

  • Participates in Telemedicine Conference Calls and assists the medical staff with physician orders, lab orders and other forms that may need to be processed.

  • Serves as liaison between patient and medical staff for any questions regarding telemedicine appointments and provides clarification when necessary.

  • Performs patient screening and triage.

  • Obtains patient health history and updates electronic health records as required. Monitor patients height, weight and vital signs; record chronic meds (including strength and dosing schedule), update as needed; Record reason for visit. Always performs concise and thorough documentation in patient charts.

  • Assists in maintaining order and cleanliness, i.e. in laboratory, exam rooms, central supply and nurse’s station.

  • Administers medications orally and by injection including routine vaccinations, under clinician’s written order.

  • Enter Immunizations into the Web-Based Immunization Information System (WEBIZ) Registry and assist in the recall system.

  • Participates in meeting Strategic Plan and Clinic goals as identified.

  • Call patients with normal lab/test results, or abnormal results per written clinician instruction. Call or fax in refill prescriptions as directed by clinician.

  • Assist in receiving and stocking of medications, medication samples and supplies.

  • Autoclaving and maintenance of sterile surgical instruments and supplies.

  • Schedule patient for transportation.

  • Assist with the re-scheduling and notification of clients when a Clinic is cancelled or re-scheduled. Give follow-up phone calls for No call or no show patient to inquire.

  • Assist providers with paperwork outside of the clinic as well as paperwork related to referrals (i.e. Specialty Consultations, home health, physical therapy, etc.).

  • Guides and instructs patients in self-care activities i.e. personal hygiene, nutrition, family planning, and grooming needs.

  • Sets up and operates specialized equipment for care of patients (i.e., EKG, suction, inhalation therapy, spirometry, etc.).

  • Assists physician/clinical nurse in the application of life saving techniques in emergency cases.

  • Applies dressings and bandages as directed, removes sutures; charts pertinent notes according to standards; gives of a variety of irrigations under direction of clinical nurse.

  • Collects and prepares lab specimens i.e. blood, urine, stool, sputum, etc.

  • Draws blood, performs procedures for laboratory tests and EKG’s, and makes referrals to other care providers as needed. Perform finger-sticks, skin test, throat swabs, EKG’s, and ear lavage under supervision of clinician. Daily Point of Care Testing for Quality Care and documentation in appropriate electronic health record logs.

  • Provides lab technician functions and serves as a back-up in the lab on an as-needed basis.

  • Provides health screening and health education for groups and individuals as indicated and assists in organizing and implementation of immunization program.

  • Maintains inventory in laboratory and supply room and patient exam rooms.

  • Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.

  • Knowledge experience and proficiency in electronic medical record systems.

  • Knowledge of HIPAA and how it applies to this position.

  • Maintains confidentiality when interacting with patients, families, personnel, and the public.

  • Knowledge of human body anatomy and physiology, sterile techniques and procedures, how to meet, deal and work with medical, surgical and psychiatric patients,

  • Knowledge of modern principles, methods and procedures of nursing care, including medications, treatments, and patient hygiene and bedside care.

  • Knowledge of current medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of isolation, aseptic and sterile techniques.

  • Ability to lift, stand, and assist patients when transporting, or assist patients in wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility aids.

  • Ability to administer prescribed medications and treatments.

  • Ability to take vital signs.

  • Ability to maintain accurate patient records.

  • Ability to understand and follow technical written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to respond effectively to emergency situations.

  • Ability to learn to effectively operate specialized medical equipment.

  • Ability to work effectively with physicians, registered nurses and other health professionals.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

  • Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner, building respect and confidence.

  • Answer incoming, outgoing calls in a professional manner.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit and stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to operate a motor vehicle; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment
  • Work is generally performed in a clinical setting with a moderate noise level.

Hiring preference is provided to members of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California followed by members of other federally recognized tribes. Must pass and comply with the PL101.630-Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Protection Act. Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California requires any designated candidate to complete a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening, must possess a valid NV or CA. driver license within thirty (30) days of employment, (when applicable) and PL 101-630 Criminal / Character Investigation background check.
