About the Role:
As the Patrol Superintendent, you will play a critical role in overseeing the maintenance and repair of county roads, facilities, and infrastructure, while managing a team of highway crew members. This is a leadership position reporting directly to the Highway Commissioner, where you will be responsible for a variety of essential tasks ranging from supervising daily operations, enforcing safety regulations, to handling emergency response efforts. You will be part of a dedicated team that works to ensure the safety, quality, and efficiency of the county’s roadways.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Supervision: Lead and manage highway crews, ensuring projects are completed efficiently and safely.
- Project Oversight: Manage the resources, equipment, and materials needed for various maintenance and renovation projects.
- Safety & Compliance: Establish and enforce safety regulations, ensuring that all team members follow best practices and comply with relevant laws.
- Emergency Response: Be on-call and available 24/7 for emergency dispatches, including snow removal and storm-related work.
- Collaboration: Act as a liaison with the WI DOT, elected officials, and other stakeholders to coordinate highway-related matters.
- Performance Reviews: Conduct regular audits of crew performance, managing time sheets, job assignments, and necessary disciplinary actions.
- Winter Operations: Operate the State Weather Forecasting System to assist with winter storm forecasting and reports.
Qualifications:
- Education & Experience:
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- 7-9 years of experience in highway work, including machinery operations and highway maintenance.
- 2-3 years of direct supervisory experience.
- Certifications:
- CDL with endorsements for air brakes, combination vehicles, and tankers.
- Preferred Skills:
- Courses in safety, personnel management, and construction or highway engineering.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of machinery, materials, and engineering principles used in highway work.
- Ability to lead, motivate, and manage a diverse team.
- Strong communication skills to work with elected officials, state agencies, and the public.
- Experience handling emergency situations and working in variable weather conditions.
Working Conditions:
- This role requires frequent highway travel and the ability to work in various weather conditions.
- The position demands physical endurance, including lifting up to 100 pounds, working in both indoor and outdoor environments, and performing a variety of tasks that require mobility and physical labor.
