Wesley Shelter Community Engagement Specialist

Wesley Shelter Inc. is the domestic violence and sexual assault response agency in Wilson County. Wesley Shelter has been serving the Wilson community through its many programs since 1983. Services include: 24-Hour Crisis Line, Domestic and Sexual Violence Response, The Edward Y.C. Thorne Safe House, Legal Services, Therapy, Children's Programs, Hispanic Outreach Services, Community Education, Prevention Services, The Clothes Line and more.

The Community Engagement Specialist is a vital role at Wesley Shelter, dedicated to fostering community connections and improving support systems for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Reporting to the Program Director, this position focuses on engaging the community, identifying affordable housing options for survivors, sourcing untapped resources, and raising awareness about the organization’s mission and services. The ideal candidate is a dynamic communicator and advocate with experience in community relations, resource development, and housing support.

Key Responsibilities:

Affordable Housing Coordination:

  • Build and maintain relationships with landlords, property managers, and housing authorities to identify safe, affordable housing options for survivors.
  • Assist survivors in navigating the housing application process, including eligibility requirements and securing necessary documentation.
  • Develop a database of available housing resources and maintain ongoing communication with housing providers.

Community Engagement:

  • Serve as the organization’s representative in community coalitions, events, and networking opportunities to strengthen partnerships and raise awareness.
  • Develop and implement strategies to engage local businesses, faith-based organizations, and community groups in supporting survivors.
  • Organize and participate in public awareness campaigns, presentations, and educational workshops about domestic and sexual violence, and human trafficking.

Resource Development:

  • Identify and cultivate untapped community resources, including financial, material, and volunteer support for survivors.
  • Collaborate with local agencies and organizations to enhance service delivery and access to resources.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of community services and resources to provide referrals and build partnerships.

Advocacy and Awareness:

  • Educate the public on the prevalence and impact of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.
  • Advocate for the needs of survivors at local and regional levels, emphasizing the importance of community involvement.
  • Develop materials and content to promote the organization’s programs and initiatives on social media, newsletters, and public platforms.

Collaboration and Reporting:

  • Work closely with program staff to ensure housing and resource needs are integrated into survivor care plans.
  • Track and report on engagement activities, housing placements, and partnerships to demonstrate impact and inform strategic planning.
  • Support grant writing efforts by providing data and success stories related to housing and community engagement.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Public Relations, Community Development, or a related field (equivalent experience considered).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in community engagement, housing coordination, or advocacy work.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish ~ preferred
  • Strong understanding of issues related to domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and trauma-informed care.
  • Excellent communication, networking, and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficiency in public speaking and presenting to diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of affordable housing systems, resources, and challenges.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with data management systems.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to work 32 hours a week.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and travel locally as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
  • Successful completion of a background check.

Salary: $15.00 – 20.00
