HOURS
35 hours/week, 10 months, 182 days
FLSA: Non-exempt
Contract Unit: This position is part of the non-supervisory support services bargaining unit.
QUALIFICATIONS
A high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
Effective communication skills including ability to interpret both signed and voice communication in ASL and Signed English.
Thorough understanding of deaf culture.
Verification of applicable course work.
Ability to work cooperatively with students, classroom teachers and special educators.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associate’s degree from Interpreter Preparation program or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university, or 5 years of experience in sign language interpreting.
NIC (National Interpreter Certification) EIPA 2.5 or above (Educational Interpreter Performance assessment) Certifications, or State QAS level III.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide communication access to students who are deaf or hard of hearing by faithfully and accurately representing the classroom instruction, teacher/student dialogue, and relevant sound information in the mode of communication used by the student.
Support educational goals set by the IEP team.
Use the appropriate modality, language and language level appropriate for student as designated by the student’s IEP.
Ensure that teacher’s message is being conveyed clearly and accurately while also ensuring student has the opportunity to participate in classroom discussions and social interactions.
Maintain confidentiality and follow RID’s Professional Code of Conduct.
Work cooperatively with students, classroom teachers and special educators.
