Reading Specialist
Willow Hill School seeks to add an additional Tutorial Teacher to our School, starting for the Fall of 2025.
Founded in 1970, Willow Hill School provides a supportive and individualized educational program for middle and high school students who are capable of advancing along a strong academic curriculum but have experienced frustration in earlier school settings. Located in Sudbury, MA our School consists of students in grades 6 through 12.
The Reading Specialist is a specialized teacher providing a variety of support to students and faculty. The Reading Specialist supports the academic programs of students with diagnosed learning differences and students requiring intervention, and additionally works with faculty and parents to ensure that learning differences and strategies for intervention are well understood and supported in the school community.
Tutorials are flexibly grouped to target the changing needs of students on a continuous basis, taking into consideration of academic and social factors. The Reading Specialist and our Tutorial Team, along with our Director of Instructional Services will work with students throughout the year in small group tutorials.
Duties and Responsibilities:
•Meet with small groups of students to target areas of need for academic support.
•Collaborate with other faculty, staff and administration to continuously meet the changing needs of our students.
•Maintain and update students’ learning profiles
•Help teachers design and implement strategies and accommodations to support individual students’ learning needs
•Facilitate communication between families, the School, and any outside service providers or agencies to effectively support students learning
•Conduct formal and informal screenings and assessments
•Provide intervention support of specific skills for individual students
•Help students develop effective learning strategies that promote academic improvement
•Attend and actively participate in Student Support Team meetings and Staff Meetings
•Within Language Arts: providing support with reading and written skills.
•With Study Skills: Help to develop effective study habits and research strategies. Provide student with ways to improve listening, time management, note taking and organizational skills. Providing strategies for comprehension, vocabulary development and test taking strategies.
•Provide students with support in executive functioning areas such as organizational skills.
Desired Qualifications and Skills:
•MA Teaching License
•Master’s Degree in Special Education preferred
•Previous experience directly serving children with learning differences or other special needs in a school setting
•Training in reading systems such as Wilson or Orton-Gillingham preferred
•Expertise in the areas of assessment, differentiation, and case management
•Ability to use technology to enhance learning
•Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities
•Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
