Hours/Days:  Approximately 201 days (180 school days, 11 holidays, additional 10 days before/after school available as needed) 7.0 hours per day M-F, schedule based on bell schedule and student need

Benefits:  Position qualifies for medical, dental, vision, life, AD&D and LTD through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB), effective the first day of the month following start date.  Position is WA State Department of Retirement Systems eligible.

 
Job Summary:  Under the guidance of the Certificated ESA School Nurse (district nurse), the LPN/RN delivers school health services to students and staff within the district. The school nurse's scope of practice is defined by laws, regulations, and professional school nursing standards. The LPN/RN operates in nearly total autonomy without day-to-day supervision. This work assist toward the accomplishment of the mission of Woodland Public Schools of preparing students for careers, life, and college so that they can become responsible and successful citizens.

Nurse Classification:
  • High levels of Autonomy - The employee operates in nearly total autonomy without day-to-day supervision from a teacher or other certificated staff member.
  • Primary Program Responsibility - The position is a "one-off" position that has significant responsibility for a specific program. A majority of the tasks involve coordination, organization, and supervision of broad programs.
  • Technical Skill - The position requires that the employee possesses and maintain a higher level of technical skill with specialized software, tools, or techniques.
Qualifications:
  • Degree in Nursing (LPN or RN or higher nursing degree)
  • Valid Washington State License (LPN or RN)
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification
  • Ability to work and communicate well with staff members
  • One year of job-related experience working with children in an educational setting preferred
  • Experience which demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and skills in working effectively in a team environment, providing support to achieve the desired goal(s)
  • Possess excellent problem solving, analytical, and conflict resolution skills and the ability to think quickly
  • Regular and punctual attendance 
  • School nursing or public health experience desirable
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to effectively communicate with and appreciate individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds
  • Ability to learn and use a computer monitor, keyboard, and appropriate adaptive technologies daily
  • Ability to be flexible with assigned tasks and schedules
  • Ability to lift and move objects as required by the job
  • Ability to independently and safely escort students around the school building and grounds
  • Ability to observe the behavior of students, both visually and by listening and to communicate those observations with other appropriate service providers
  • Awareness of Washington State student Hearing and Vision screening requirements
  • Awareness of Washington State School Immunizations laws
  • Awareness of Washington State laws that pertain to school medication administration and other delegated nursing tasks in the school setting                    
  • Awareness of current state and federal laws pertaining to the education of students with special needs
  • Able to drive a car and work in several different work locations if needed
  • Able to keep and maintain essential health records
  • Applicant must be able to work with students, staff, parents and community patrons in an amiable and productive manner

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Must be able to safely perform nursing tasks in the school setting such as administration of medication and other necessary tasks as permitted by licensure or as delegated by district nurse (according to Washington State Law and school district policy)
  • Use of a computer for charting assessments, health room office visits, and maintaining other health records for a large portion of the work day
  • Perform/assist with student vision and hearing screenings
  • Maintain student vaccination records to ensure that every student is in compliance with the Washington State School Immunization laws including exclusions from and re-entry to school when not in compliance with the immunization laws
  • Provide care to students and staff who have been injured or who present with acute illnesses
  • Implement care as written in health care plans for students who have life-threatening and/or chronic health conditions. 
  • Follow district and state policies and protocols on reportable health conditions to the local and state health departments
  • Serve as liaison between school personnel, family, community, and health care providers as appropriate
  • Communicates effectively with parents/guardians about their child's health
  • Perform health care procedures that are within the scope of the level of nursing licensure, nurse Practice Act, and as ordered by a licensed healthcare provider
  • Assist faculty and staff in monitoring chronic health conditions
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of student health concerns

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.   
 
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment can be moderate to loud.
