What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temp Special Deputy Park Ranger position at Wright County?
This position is similar to a Community Service Officer position at other agencies. WORK SCHEDULE IS PRIMARILY WEEKENDS (Daytime and Evenings hours) WITH THE BUSY SEASON BEING MAY THROUGH OCTOBER, BUT WILL VARY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AS NEEDED.
Performs intermediate technical work providing security for County parks, trails, lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water through routine patrol, community policing, preliminary investigations, and enforcement of related County ordinances and State Statutes. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Supervisor of the Recreational Service Unit.
- Enforces County ordinances, rules, and State Statutes related to County parks, waterbodies and trails, and the operation of boats, snowmobiles, and ATVs.
- Receives, prioritizes, and responds to non-emergency calls.
- Responds to emergency situations such as accidents and medical emergencies in the County's parks, lakes, rivers, and trails.
- Documents activity through the preparation of reports, logs, and citations.
- Testifies in court proceedings to present evidence and to give personal account of incident as needed.
- Responsible for maintaining equipment that is issued and used.
- Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
Must be able to pass a medical evaluation, physical assessment screening, psychological evaluation, and background investigation.
A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is also required upon hire.
Knowledge of local, State, and Federal laws, regulations, rules, and ordinances relating to parks, waterbodies, and trails; knowledge of approved office practices, procedures, and techniques; knowledge of the streets and highways and geography of Wright County; knowledge of first aid and emergency medical response; skill in the use of standard office equipment, including computer and software programs; skill in assessing situations quickly and accurately and implementing responses and course of action to resolve serious/major incidents within established guidelines; verbal and written communication skills sufficient to effectively draft and present sensitive or technical information, including investigative reports, and respond to questions from a wide variety of audiences, including speaking before groups and with the media; reading comprehension skills sufficient to understand and interpret technical documents; interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange and/or convey information, receive work direction, and maintain effective working relationships; ability to learn computer systems specific to the office and County; ability to operate and use emergency vehicles, watercraft, ATVs, snowmobiles, first aid kit, traffic control vest; ability to perform physical tasks while under emotional stress; ability to use practical judgment in potentially dangerous, life threatening situations; ability to sufficiently defend self and others in a physical encounter; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to effectively deal with hostile, potentially violent individuals and de-escalate dangerous behavior; ability to work long hours which may include rotating shifts; ability to pay attention to detail and effectively organize time and anticipate, plan and successfully respond to changing circumstances, pressure and deadlines; ability to perform all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices; ability to communicate courteously and professionally while maintaining positive working relationships with others when carrying out all job functions.
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
