Position Summary:

Creates a flexible classroom environment and promotes learning and personal growth in an effort to establish rapport and motivate students towards desired outcomes.

 Essential Functions:

  1. Demonstrates preparation of lessons utilizing specially designed instruction (SDI) as called for on the students’ Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  2. Provides direct support to Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students by delivering specially designed instruction to students of varying abilities through the use of a variety of activities, techniques, questions, materials and student input (compensate for individual needs).
  3. When assigned, serves as a collaborative teaching partner with a general education teacher or support facilitator. 
  4. Evaluates student’s progress and keep appropriate records including data on IEP goals, behavior plans, and the use of accommodations in the classroom.
  5. Participates in required ESE meetings and serve as Case Manager for assigned ESE students.
  6. Teaches assigned grade/subject matter, utilizing course of study and other appropriate learning activities.
  7. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  8. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  9. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  10. Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
  11. Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students' progress and interpret the school program.
  12. Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  13. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by professional growth activities.
  14. Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with guidelines.
  15. Supervises students in and out-of-classroom activities during the school day.
  16. Administers group standardized tests in accordance with state testing program.
  17. Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
  18. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  19. Communicate effectively with others and exhibit a willingness to share ideas and talents with colleagues.
  20. Perform other duties as requested by the Principal.  
  21. Ensures all First Coast YMCA standards and best practices are implemented and followed.
  22. Applies YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations and child abuse prevention.
  23. Ensures the health and safety of all members/guests.
  24. Inspect physical space to ensure the safety, orderliness, sanitation and cleanliness of facilities.

 Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in education or related subject required.
  1. State of Florida Certification in appropriate ESE area, and separate subject area content certifications or the Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum, whichever is appropriate.
  2. Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience.
  1. Experience working with students from an ethnically diverse, urban population preferred.

 Physical Demands:

Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities.
