What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Around Water - Lifeguard/Swim Instructor position at YMCA OF METROPOLITAN DALLAS?

Lifeguards maintain safe swimming conditions in and around the pool and create a positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement. Their presence allows us to offer life-changing programs in the areas of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. When we do this effectively, we deliver on our cause as a nonprofit; strengthening community.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF A SAFETY AROUND WATER LIFEGUARD:
Candidate will act as a lifeguard or swim instructor during the Safety Around Water community swim program. Instruct swimmers in basic swimming skills. Instruct parents and children in water safety using Know Before You Go materials. Measure outcomes for participants. Enforce pool regulations. Encourage parent and children involvement. Follows all YMCA policies. Provide vigilant, undistracted supervision of the pool. Understand and be able to carry out emergency procedures.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must be 18 years of age or older with reliable transportation.

Preferred candidates will have and maintain current certifications for YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, CPR and First Aid (American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer, American Heart Association Health Care Provider, Oxygen Administration and AED. If ARC Lifeguard certified, must cross over to YMCA Lifeguard within 30 days of hire.
Receive OSHA Blood Borne Pathogens, YMCA Child Abuse Prevention, and Drug & Alcohol within 30 days of Hire Date.
It is a plus to come in with certifications completed.
Physical and Mental requirements:
Must be able to accomplish the following tasks:
- Be in the water for extended periods
- Move to various locations in and out of the water
- Able to kneel
- See, observe, and hear all participants, and make sound judgments and decisions, even when distracted by noise and activity
- Perform all swimming and rescue skills being taught
- Think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and remember
- Lift up to 40 pounds in order to assist participants as needed, and to set up equipment
- Work in all temperature conditions at an indoor pool and outdoor pool.
- Demonstrate the ability teach the KBYG water safety curriculum and the development of basic swimming skills.
- Teach, lead others and effectively communicate with participants and their parents.
- Must be able to perform the duties of a lifeguard: Remain alert with no lapses in consciousness, think in the abstract, solve problems, make sound decisions.
