What are the responsibilities and job description for the Program Director - Camp Starfish position at YOUNG MENS CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF KINGSTON?
The Camp Starfish Program Director supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. This is a grant funded camp located at the Kingston YMCA with specific summer learning loss prevention, healthy living, and service learning objectives. Candidates should be prepared to be enthusiastically supportive of program activities. Preference given to those candidates pursuing a career in education. The Camp Program Director shall design and deliver an enrichment program of math, reading, science and other specialty programs tailored to age-appropriate skills. Program Director will work with other counselors to bring about quality programming in specialty areas. Activities should nurture creativity, cooperation, skill and self-esteem and support the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall camp experience.
Camp Season runs 6/30/2025-8/8/25. Mandatory training dates TBD.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
- Coordinate day-to-day camp operations, including scheduling and logistics.
- Plan, setup and deliver engaging camp programs, in alignment with the enrichment goals of the Camp Starfish experience.
- Promote an inclusive environment among staff and campers.
- Oversee the camp's social media accounts.
- Organize and engage in communications with parents.
- Instruct Counselors on how to teach activities within specialty. Encourage activity planning and leadership for Counselors assigned to the activity.
- Lead specialty activities with assistance from Counselors and help keep Counselors focused on the activity.
- Control all supply inventory used in specialty. Assist Camp Director with ordering supplies. Keep supply storage area neat and organized.
- Encourage camper’s youth development progress. As a leader, set a good example for the children. Teach campers how to solve problems and maintain basic discipline and group control.
- Help group maintain camp cleanliness.
- Perform all responsibilities in an enthusiastic and committed manner.
- Take the initiative to be actively participatory in all activities.
- Must attend and complete all required trainings.
- Other duties, responsibilities and activities may be assigned.
Qualifications:
- Education: Degree in Education, Social Work, Recreation Management, or related field preferred.

Experience:
- At least 2 years of camp management experience preferred.
- Experience with social learning, parent engagement, and social media management.
- Strong knowledge of child development and behavior management.
