The Counselor works in a dynamic social environment and assists the Special Education Teachers and Principal with the implementation of counseling and therapeutic services. The counselor is part of a coordinated, interdisciplinary treatment team. The position is designed to organize and carry out individual and educational treatment plans and to maintain the therapeutic and academic environment. Assists the student(s) in his or her adjustment and daily functioning within the classroom through interaction, communication, intervention, and observation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Serve as a support system and direct resource for staff by providing guidance for effective class management.
2. Work clinically and educationally with individual students.
3. Act as a leader and/or co-leader of school-based counseling and social skills groups.
4. Help plan, organize and carry out individual educational plan (IEP) goals and participate in IEP meetings.
5. Assist in maintaining a warm environment.
6. Coordinate behavior plans with teacher and Behavior Specialist.
7. Help maintain open communication with parents, guardians, and caregivers.
8. Follow all crisis intervention procedures as set forth by the individual’s IEP.
9. Assesses and provides interventions when students cannot effectively function within the classroom setting.
10.Problem-solve with students through coaching and mentoring.
11.Maintains documentation of individual student files that include referrals, incidents, contracts, meeting, and phone calls. Maintains daily logs of students serviced.
12.Communicates consistently and effectively with students, staff, parents, guardians, counselors and other professionals. Must be able to relate well with people who are under stress and have excellent communication, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.
13.Attend and assist all staff meetings, clinical team meetings, training, and retreats.
14.Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
15.May conduct weekly workshops for community.
16.May conduct bi-monthly social skills/problem solving activities in an assigned classroom(s).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
· Must possess effective communication skills that allow for productive communication.
· Must possess effective working knowledge of current and professional clinical management techniques and practices in Special Education environments.
· Must be able to work effectively as part of a team in a collaborative manner.
· Must be able to understand and interpret complex data and abstract concepts and be able to conduct research necessary to develop clinical treatment plans.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
* Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in counseling, psychology, social work or related field. Masters degree in Counseling, Psychology or related field is highly desirable.
*. Knowledge of Special Education- related programs, policies, and laws.
* LMFT license or Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential REQUIRED.
* Interns will be considered if they have a supervisor in place.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Must be able to effectively communicate verbally in English fluently.
· Must be able to read and compose written communications English fluently.
· Must be able to use a computer and telephone.
· Must be able to lift and move at least 70 lbs.
· Must be able to physically participate in the physical restraining of a student using Day School approved student behavioral management techniques and methods.
