Crestline Construction is Hiring a Civil Construction Foreman Near The Dalles, OR

Under the general supervision of the Superintendent or Project Manager, performs a wide range of tasks and supervision related to heavy civil construction projects. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily in a wide range of work conditions and situations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts site assessment prior to beginning work on job and discusses project issues with Project Manager prior to starting operations.
  • Reviews job specifications, plans or drawings, and understands budgets.
  • Secures equipment and required resources for daily operation. Ensures safety equipment and related items are in place.
  • Requests utility locates, maps, drawings and other materials or information to ensure work activity is conducted in a safe, legal, and productive manner.
  • Reviews crew readiness to work and provides direction to laborers, operators, and others to facilitate smooth operations throughout the project.
  • Provides training and job safety orientations to crew members. Provides one-on-one training, conducts crew meetings, and provides corrective instruction as needed for all crew members.
  • Monitors construction operations for adherence to safety rules, work plans, and project expectations. Maintains all changes to work on as-builts daily.
  • Operates equipment and performs other tasks as needed to facilitate progress of the job.
  • Completes inspection checklists, reads work instructions, safety documentation, etc. Ensures quality control and immediately handles corrective measures.
  • Completes daily log, production reports, time and material documents and other administrative duties related to the job.
  • Documents and corrects as appropriate: safety hazards, incidents, injuries, near-misses, equipment damage, employee discipline, public liability concerns and other notable events.
  • Schedules work ahead for future activity. Critiques and adjusts day to day activities to meet safety and production concerns or requirements.

Qualifications

  • Must have a valid license and clean driving record.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Mechanical abilities and aptitude.
  • Skill in equipment operations related to the jobs assigned.
  • Knowledge of hand and power tool operation and safe use.
  • Knowledge of effective ergonomic strategies for lifting, moving, and using heavy tools, materials, or equipment.
  • Ability to perform all essential functions in a wide range of weather and working conditions.
  • Ability to maintain business relationships and conduct oneself in a professional manner.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools.
  • Ability to participate in worksite safety assessments and perform all work in accordance with safety rules and practices.
  • Ability to utilize technology, including the use of computers, smartphones, iPads, GPS modeling systems, and construction industry software.
  • Ability to read, and interpret job plans, prints, drawings, and other documentation common with civil construction projects.
  • Ability to continually learn the concepts of civil construction operations to provide increasing levels of support and assistance to the Superintendent and Project Manager.
  • Ability to coordinate the activity of crew members.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with various personality types.
  • Ability to enforce firm but fair discipline practices.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • As the first tier of job management, the Foreman plays one of the most crucial roles in safety, production, quality control, and job coordination. He is responsible for alerting the Project Manager or other management representative of safety, productivity or quality concerns with co-workers that need to be addressed. The Foreman may distribute verbal or written warnings and/or suspend an employee from the worksite if necessary to maintain a safe, productive work area.

Education and Experience

  • Education in math, reading and writing equivalent to high school level competencies.
  • Experience and familiarity with job layout and assessment tools for civil engineering projects.
  • Completion or ability to complete an industry-recognized apprenticeship program.
  • NOTE: An equivalent combination of experience, education and training may substitute for the above requirements.

Physical Demands

  • Routine lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Using shovels, rakes, pickax, and other hand tools to move and position heavy materials.
  • Climbing ladders and equipment where balance and coordination is critical to safe work.
  • Crawling in and under equipment and trenches where manual dexterity and flexibility of arms, legs and back is required to access the area of work and perform tasks.
  • Tolerance for heat and cold. Work areas are outdoors and in areas that are not climate controlled.
  • Tolerance for wind and rain, as many operations must be performed in adverse weather conditions.
  • Visual, olfactory, and tactile acuity needed for recognition of equipment or materials problems, progress, and accuracy of work and various site safety hazards.

  • The work requires reliable attendance year-round. Reliability is defined as working at least 97% of scheduled work hours.
