Nurse
WALES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
2024-2025
Anticipated Start Date: August 28, 2024
REPORTS TO: Principal
RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages the school health services program under the direction of the Principal and Superintendent in compliance with school district health policies, procedures, and protocols. Strengthens and facilitates student academic success by supporting all students optimal level of health and wellness as well as a healthy school environment. The focus of nursing services is the prevention of illnesses, early detection and intervention of health problems, and appropriate referrals as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Functions in accordance with the Standards of Professional School Nursing Practice, the Nurse Practice Act and federal and state statutes related to school nursing
· Provides first aid and medically prescribed services
· Records immunizations, health findings and other relevant health data
· Communicates with parents/guardians on the health needs/concerns of children
· Facilitates the mandated screening programs consistent with Massachusetts General law and as required by Massachusetts Department of Public Health and provides referrals as needed
· Provides preventive health services to students including screenings, health education and consultation
· Provides nursing assessments and develops 504’s and individual health care plans for students requiring health and nursing interventions
· Initiates referrals to parents, school personnel and community health resources for intervention and follow-up services, as needed
· Collaborates with the Massachusetts immunization and Epidemiology Programs to ensure infection control in the school setting and promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through assessment of immunization compliance, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases
· Provides recommendations for the TRU61 School Health policy development and establishes standards and reports for school health service programs in collaboration with the MDPH, the MDOE, and other state agencies
· Participates as the health specialist on teams and committees to develop plans including behavior plans, Re-entry plans, 504’s and IEP’s that support a student’s academic success
· Participates as a health resource in the development of procedures for disaster preparedness planning and crisis management intervention
· Coordinates school health activities and serves as a liaison between the home, school, and community
· Prepares the budget for health office supplies
· Provides consultation on school health issues to all school and community members committed to the well-being of our students
· Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to determine and maintain updated school health programs and school nursing practices
· Performs other duties as assigned by Principal, School Committee or Superintendent
ABILITY TO:
· Develop and maintain accurate student health records
· Identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease
· Coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources
· Maintain positive and open lines of communication with all staff, students and their families
· Manage multiple tasks
· Maintain confidentiality
KNOLEDGE OF:
· Medical disorders and treatment
· Child growth and development
· Public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies
· Universal precautions
· Federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services
· District policies, procedures, rules and regulations
· FERPA and HIPPA regulations
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Evidence of ability to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed above are representative of the knowledge, skill and / or ability required
· Maintain certification in CPR, AED and First Aid
· Five years’ experience as a registered nurse, with a minimum of three years’ experience as a public health nurse, school nurse, or pediatric nurse preferred
· Approved CORI and Fingerprinting results
EDUCATION:
· Bachelor’s degree in nursing from accredited college or university
· Appropriate Massachusetts Department of Education certification
