This position offers a high level of autonomy, allowing the RVT to manage medical needs and treatment plans while collaborating closely with the veterinary team and sanctuary staff. The RVT will play a pivotal role in our efforts to provide top-notch medical care to our resident animals, ensuring their health and comfort are always prioritized.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Medical Care: Provide compassionate and high-quality medical care to animals. This includes administering medications, performing treatments, and assisting with medical procedures as needed under the guidance of a veterinarian.
  • Diagnostic Procedures: Conduct and assist with various diagnostic procedures, such as blood draws, radiographs, and ultrasounds, to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.
  • Medical Records Management: Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for all sanctuary animals, documenting treatments, medications, and observations in a timely manner.
  • Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond to medical emergencies and provide immediate care to injured or ill animals, including after-hours on-call duties as needed.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with the animal care staff and other sanctuary personnel to develop and implement individualized care plans for animals with special medical needs.
  • Animal Handling: Safely handle and restrain animals during medical procedures, ensuring their safety and comfort at all times.
  • Client Education: Educate sanctuary staff and volunteers on proper animal care techniques, medication administration, and recognizing signs of illness or distress.
  • Facility Maintenance: Assist with maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the veterinary clinic and medical equipment, ensuring compliance with sanitation standards and regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License: Must possess a valid RVT license in California.
  • Previous experience working with farm animals as an RVT in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or similar sanctuary setting.
  • Passion for Animal Welfare: Genuine dedication to the welfare and well-being of animals, with a strong desire to make a positive difference in their lives.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, demonstrating excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle animals with kindness, patience, and empathy, especially in stressful or challenging situations.
