Construction Manager Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, this position will manage Habitat for Humanity core construction programs and BBHH facility repairs. The construction manager will be responsible for the outcome of each construction project as well as the annual construction program and schedule. The construction manager will be the primary Habitat representative at project sites.
This person will manage construction tasks as well as supervise and work side by side with staff and volunteers on construction sites.

It is important that the potential candidate has a strong connection with the BBHH mission and objectives and has a desire to serve in an ecumenical inclusive faith-based nonprofit environment. A strongly desired characteristic of the position is a knowledge of and ability to quickly form a network of working relationships within the regional building trades industry.

Areas of Responsibility

Construction Manager Job Description

  • Manage Construction Activities of Affiliate
  • Develop a construction plan for the year in coordination with related staff
  • Provide a construction schedule for each project
  • Coordinate appropriate materials from approved vendors
  • Manage warehouse inventory
  • Coordinate and oversee sub-contractor work from approved vendors
  • Oversee daily construction activity
  • Ensure building process complies with the Uniform Building Code and affiliate green building standards
  • Thorough knowledge of local building codes, OSHA requirements, policies and procedures for permitting, zoning, and inspections
  • Assist in developing house plans
  • Work with the Construction Committee to identify suitable building lots and rehab homes
  • Ensure all projects are completed on schedule
  • Position entails some evening and weekend work in coordination with entire staff to share these responsibilities
  • Develop a budget for each building project
  • Secure multiple bids for building materials and professional labor
  • Assist in the development of donations of professional labor and in-kind materials
  • Track building costs
  • Ensure all projects are within budget
  • Check and submit all receipts and charges to the Finance Manager monthly
  • Communicate volunteer numbers and tasks that are needed to Volunteer Coordinator
  • Serve as the crew leader for volunteers on site
  • Ensure proper training and instructions on Habitat’s construction practices are given to all volunteers
  • Enforce safety policy on the job site based on obtaining/maintaining HFHI Competent

Work with Partner Families through the Construction Process

  • Assist partner families in the selection of plans and option items
  • Supervise partner families as they complete sweat equity construction hours
  • Complete walk-through with partner families upon completion
  • Work with the Family Support Committee to provide homeowner education
  • Work with partner families with call backs, warranty issues, or maintenance advice

Requirements/Skills/Experience

  • A commitment to Big Bend Habitat for Humanity’s mission
  • Preferred Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in construction related field
  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required, with significant residential construction supervisory experience
  • Successful candidate will be able to complete the Habitat for Humanity Competent

Person Training within the first 30 days of employment

  • Experience working with planning documents, including CAD drawings of house plans, etc.
  • A demonstrated work ethic
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively with people of diverse social and economic backgrounds
  • An ability to lead and teach unskilled volunteers in the tasks of home construction
  • Ability to effectively operate or manage driving trucks, towing trailers, standard construction related equipment, machines, tools, and to maneuver typical construction site obstacles
  • Ability to climb, lift, reach, stand for extended periods of time and carry a minimum of 50 pounds, as required
  • Ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously
  • Personal integrity
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • A current contractor’s license for our area preferred, but is not necessary
  • Valid driver’s license required
