Position: Fall Internship - Newark Earthworks
Type: Unpaid Internship
Schedule: Part-time, unpaid ten-week position starting on Monday, September 9th and ending on Friday, December 6th 2024
Notes on Schedule: The Great Circle Museum is open Thursday through Saturday 10am to 4pm. Wednesdays are reserved for education, training, and team building which are essential to performing the duties of this position. There will be occasional work opportunities available on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Location: Newark Earthworks, 455 Hebron Rd., Heath, OH 43056.
Reports to: Historic Site Manager

About Ohio History Connection:
The Ohio History Connection, formerly the Ohio Historical Society, is a statewide history organization with the mission to spark discovery of Ohio's stories. Chartered in 1885, the OHC carries out history services for Ohio and its citizens focused on preserving and sharing the state's history. This includes housing the state historic preservation office, the official state archives, local history office and managing more than 50 sites and museums across Ohio.
Summary:
Interns at Newark Earthworks engage in a variety of work-based learning activities and projects at a precontact American Indian site recently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Students will interact with visitors coming to see the site from all over the world and will be exposed to different cultures and viewpoints. Interns assist with the facilitation of formal and informal interpretive programs that enhance visitor experience and knowledge of Hopewell Culture and foster a welcoming and engaging environment for all who visit the site.
Essential Functions:
  • Performing informal interpretation - roving and meeting visitors within the site not as a part of a program
  • Greeting visitors at the front desk of the museum.
  • Providing information and orientation to the site.
  • Answering questions about the Newark Earthworks and related earthwork sites.
  • Setting up the site(s) for special programming and events.
  • Providing staff support for special events and programming such as open houses.
  • Working weekend and occasional evening shifts.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Skills, Experience:
  • Must be enrolled in an academic program OR a recent graduate from an academic program (within one year)
  • A Major or an educational course in one of the following areas are preferred: American history, archaeology, art history, museum studies, education, geography, geology, natural resources, interpretation, or other relevant topics related to archeological and historical sites and museums.
Required Competencies:
  • Works well both independently and with and in support of colleagues to complete work.
  • Demonstrates a potential to communicate well in written and verbal communications, including informal mediums like email and meetings.
  • 6 months of combined experience working with the general public (ex. retail, reception, front desk work, food service, etc.)
  • Experience interacting with school-aged children.

Education and Experience Outcomes:
  • Interns will learn and appreciate the complexity, ingenuity, knowledge, and resilience of American Indian tribes that once called the land that is now Ohio their ancestral homeland.
  • Interns will receive informal interpretive training focusing on providing information in an engaging and relatable way so that visitors may leave retaining information they learned or with a memorable experience.
  • Interns will visit other historic sites in Ohio and learn how they relate to the Newark Earthworks and recognize the interconnectedness of history and human experiences.
  • Interns will learn and appreciate how the natural environment impacts the way people live and shape the landscapes around them.
  • Interns will be exposed to the behind-the-scenes tasks that are included in managing historic sites and/or museums.
